I had a Roku 2 hooked up via HDMI 3 on my XMC. I upgraded my tv to an LG 4K UHD OLED display, and got a roku 4 which offers 4k streaming. Initially I just swapped out the Roku2 with the 4. Everything works, but you must use a direct HDMI connection to one of the TV's HDMI inputs to stream 4K content since the XMC doesn't currently allow that. So I hooked up a fiber optic toslink cable to the audio output from the Roku 4 as Optical 2 input on the XMC, labeled it as Roku 4 and set as remote button 3.
I thought that a toslink would pass Dolby Digital, and DTS, etc, such that the XMC would see that encoding coming through the Optical Input, and would display the appropriate decoding type on the XMC panel.
All I ever see now on that input is "PCM 2.0". Trying to change modes never changes it.
Now the actual sound coming from 4K streaming is a full 5.1 or better surround as I hear the speakers, but my display never reflects what it is decoding. Why not?
I still have the earlier HDMI cable plugged into HDMI 3 on the back of the XMC but it is not currently connected to anything. Does having it even plugged in cause any issues?

Go to its settings menu and change the audio mode. It's probably defaulted to stereo.

Make sure the Roku has Dolby Digital and DTS set to passthrough, not downmix.

This would be one of the items that don't have two HDMI outs like Keith mentioned as a work around.

I have made sure all the settings are as suggested in this thread, and it still always shows just PCM 2.0 on the display. I'm at a loss to figure this out.

I have made sure all the settings are as suggested in this thread, and it still always shows just PCM 2.0 on the display. I'm at a loss to figure this out. I had the same problem with my Roku 4 and my Fusion 8100 AVR with my 43 inch Visio 4k TV. I finally figured out that the Roku down mixes the multi channel 5.1 to PCM 2.0 when you use the optical output. Which made no sense to me that Roku would do this as a lot of people are going to try and hook up the Roku 4 the way you and I did. I could get no work around from Roku on how to fix this. It seemed like their customer service people were clueless about what I was talking about. I ended up returning the unit. My workaround is to buy a Marantz SR 5010 that has HDMI 2.0a and HDCP and let my Visio Smart TV stream what I want to the receiver through HDMI and not use a separate streamer. I plan on buying the unit from Accessories 4Less refurbished for $650. I will move the Fusion 8100 to the family room system and sell my old Marantz NR 1403 AVR to offset the cost.

Have you tried taking the Toslink feed from the TV rather than the Roku?

+1 for geebo's suggestion. Just depends on how your TV outputs the 5.1 signal. Or, although a workaround and additional expense, you might want to try an HDMI splitter so you can send the 4K signal to your TV and the HDMI audio to the XMC-1. link

What 4K streaming content does the Roku offer that isn't already built in on the LG set?
