I bought a Teac DS-H01 docking station for my son's stereo system a few years ago. He uses an iTouch in the Teac to RCA outs to his receiver. It works great. I hadn't paid too much attention to the back but had noticed it has some other, what I thought was, input and outputs. He wants to use his PC or Mac as an output device and listen to You Tube and stored music files thru his stereo system. I knew it had a USB hook-up. After hooking up a USB cord and flipping the little switch..............NOTHING. So after watching a YT video this is apparently just a sync device and not an input. I'm not very savvy on DACs so advice is welcome. I have looked at Emotivas DACs. The DC-1 looks very nice but I don't want to spend that much so he can listen to YT over his stereo. I have no clue about the Egos. Any thoughts?

Thanks Knucklehead. I have the Behringer UFO202 that converts my cassette tapes and vinyl to digital. It does work great.

The UF0202 is also a nice USB DAC for playback. I've been using one for the past year. I compared it to an XDA-1 and found there was very little difference. I haven't bothered to compare them side by side but I suspect the Behringer would compare favorably to the XDA-1. The UF0202 makes life much more simple - fewer remotes and no rack space taken up.

The UCA202 does compare favorably with the XDA-1. It wasn't embarrassed by any means. I would have a hard time telling the difference between the two if I didn't know which one it was. I did compare directly but it was sighted. It has a slight electronicy sound in the treble compared to the XDA-1.
The DC-1 is a fantastic DAC. For the price it's stunning. I have heard DACs in my system that are well regarded and cost several times more. And it was in no way embarassed either. The main difference between that the surprisingly good UCA 202 is that it just does everything better. But what sticks out is that it has the ability to convey the dimensions of the room things are recorded in as well as place the instruments - with depth included - in the room.
And yes...even lowly Youtube files can definitely show differences in DACs. At least for me subjectively. But all that pales in comparison to what it will be attached to. What is your son's stereo system exactly? How is it arranged? Because if you want to hear a difference in DAC - and I can't guarantee that you will or not - you have to make sure the rest of the system is up to snuff.
If it's just a small stereo dock thing he's got, I wouldn't bother. If it is a GOOD hi fi system with perhaps an acoustic panel powered by a decent amp then I may start thinking about these things.

Used XDA-1's go cheap. I've bought 4 to pass to family and friends and everybody loves them. The UCA202 is stupid cheap for what you get. I still have both and am happy. My preference is the XDA for more connections, remote.

i think a dc-1 would sound nice So do I but I don't think I want to spend that much. I'll look for an XDA-1 before I jump on the Berhinger.

The behringer requires a computer. The XDA-1 is standalone and allows him to attach his playstation or x box or blu ray player to it. The XDA-1s can be found for dirt cheap on this forum. I acutally have an XDA-1 but I think I shall save it for a downstairs system too.

USB DAC = Ego, they sound amazing with everything I have used them. In my system I have a BigEgo connected to a pair of Airmotive 4's, last week I set up a system for a friend of mine using a BigEgo with a pair of Airmotive 6's, or a LittleEGo connected directly to an XPA-2 driving Paradigm Signatures, they all sound amazing. The Ti/Burr Brown DAC with analogue volume control built in to a such a small package gives sound that is unbeatable value for money.
Cheers Gary

Missed out on the XDA-2. None of my offers were accepted. It went for asking price.
