thoff , I too travel a lot for work, often between the US and Asia, Aus and Europe, so long flights. I use V-Moda headphones >>linky here<<. I have the Crossfade LP2 model, now being sold for $170. If I were to buy today I might opt for the M100 model at $270 which has been stealing lots of awards. These cans are made by musicians and sound engineers to MIL spec. Build quality is excellent and they drown out most of the ambient noise while still letting me hear the flight attendant asking me if I want a refill! You could do a lot worse than looking into V-Moda.

You should also be aware that many in-ear monitors can be used with a wide variety of different types of "tips". (I personally also hate having something in my ear canal, but I do find the little silicon rubber ones with the flanges to be less intrusive than the foam ones...) They do come in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures, and such - so you might find one you like better.... (they aren't all interchangeable, but many seem to follow some vague standard) ............................. Timster , First off, my name is also Tim. Thanks for all the information. I've been hesitant to go for "in-ear" because I do have a pair of Shure in-ears that I've worn on long flights and after a while I need to take them out just to give my ears a break from having them in. It isn't a sound issue. They are the kind where you squeeze the foam, slide them in and then the foam expands, and I just think my ears get irritated. I'll checkout the Bose you mention.

+1 there I had what I believe were the "original" Bose noise cancelling phones. I honestly didn't think they sounded especially good - too bass heavy for me - but their noise cancelling was VERY good - both for airplane noise, and even for things like lawnmowers. They seemed to have found a very good compromise between blocking high frequency noise directly (good seals and thick cups) and cancelling low frequency noise electronically. I would also rate them as being quite comfortable. I heard some Bose noise cancelling phones too. I don't remember what model but they did definitely cancel noise. It was the only noice cancellation phone I tried. The sound quality wasn't bad either. It wasn't the best I've heard of course but it sounded decent to me. It was also reasonably comfortable.

The Comply foam tips are very nice. Comfortable, too.

Don't get this If the noise cancelling is effective, I might get a couple!

I have a pair of PSB M4U2. They are nice sounding and do a good job at noise cancellation. You can find a pair on sale near your price.
