This is my first HT system. Please bare with me as I am sure my terminology will leave something to be desired. All items in my signature have arrived with the exception of the XPA-5. It will not arrive until probably the week of April 16th. The last thing i need to procure is all of the interconnects and speaker wiring. The purpose of this thread is, due to my lack of knowledge, to understand the proper way to connect the Oppo and the XMC? I understand 'proper' may be in the eye of the beholder so I feel I need to explain my/our listening habits . As of now we have had the OPPO 105 for a couple of months. We do subscribe to Tidal and stream audio through the OPPO to our Paradigm soundbar via an optical connection. Our Dish Network receiver is connected to the OPPO and then to the TV via an HDMI connection to take advantage of the Darbee capability.
Once all components are hooked up I am assuming all audio would be ran through the XMC. Any audio processing the Oppo accomplishes, would that be passed through the XMC with out further processing, or, is it better to let the XMC handle all the audio processing? As far as the video goes, the only advantage running the Dish Network receiver through the Oppo, would be to gain the Darbee processing, correct? Other than that I do not see another advantage.
How does one determine if the Oppo should handle the audio/video processing or the XMC?

The simple answer with regards to audio processing is: try it both ways and see which you prefer. You may prefer stereo analog outs from the Oppo for 2-channel (using the dedicated Sabre DAC) or the XMC.
That said, if it were me, I'd let the XMC do all audio processing and use Dirac for RC for everything.

And regarding Video processing, it is simple: The XMC-1 doesn´t have any Video processing capabilities.

If you connect the Oppo to the XMC via HDMI the Oppo performs little to no audio processing. You can choose bitstream or PCM (DSD or PCM for SACD) for the Audio but that's about it. You would have to use the multichannel analog outputs of the Oppo and connect them to the mulitchannel inputs of the XMC but then you would not be able to do any processing with the XMC and could not use Dirac. I would connect the Oppo via HDMI and let the XMC do what it does best. I would also connect the stereo balanced outputs of the Oppo to the balanced input of the XMC if you want to listen to stereo using the Sabre DACs of the Oppo. That would allow Dirac and other processing in the XMC or you could choose reference mode which would bypass everything except the volume and level controls. Video processing, of course, would be done in the Oppo only.

I would hook oppo up via hdmi, 7.1 analog , and 2 channel analog. Listen and decide for yourself which way you like it and from what source. You have the flexibility to experiment and compare DAC's of the oppo and the XMC-1, Dirac vs. no Dirac, multi channel, two channel, etc. You can't lose. Enjoy!

I would run my cable through the Oppo first so the Darbee unit would get first crack at the video and let the XMC do the magic on the audio.
