I had 3 amplifiers, 350 watts a side @ 8 ohms providing me 10 channels of amplification. I decided to add an XPA 100 amp, providing one channel that I used for my center channel. I now had eleven channels. When I did the calibration for the room, I noticed the 200 watt Emotiva amp was seemingly more powerful then my 350 watts per channel older amps. It was a cleaner sound also. Researching the web, I found there are many cases of amps degrading over time. My were 25 years old. I loved them. I decided to replace my older amps with the new Gen 3 XPA amps. I returned the XPA 100 and ordered one six channel and one five channel for my 7.2.4 set up. The sounds from my speakers are more distinct. Dialogue is easier to understand I am having quite a bit of fun with these amps and they truly upgraded my system. On my one call to support, regarding triggering, the answers came fast. If you are thinking about ordering a Gen 3 amp, let me encourage you to do so.

SOGM, I have currently the same rack setup you do. Where di you get the different sized tubing to change the opening height? I like the way you have it setup and I also need to create some room for my new XPA 5 Gen 3. That beast is the same height as my as my shelf openings.

Here are the options for support tubing I have the 12.5" tubes for amp height I also have a hook screwed into stud and strap looping through two supports (5th shelf), preventing the stand from being pulled forward by little hands Model eFP5 Contains five, 5" reduced-height pillars; replaces standard 8" pillars Model eFP12 Contains five, 12.5" extended-height pillars; replaces standard 8" pillars Model eFP18 Contains five, 18" extended-height pillars and rack rail; replaces standard 8" pillars Model eFR12-B1 Contains two, 12.5" extended-length rails; for use with model EFP12 only Model CK2 Caster kit fits models EFAB and EFAV; adds easy mobility Model eFWMC Contains five wire management clips; easily snap onto Euro Series shelves and bases

I'm sure glad I stumbled onto this thread.
I also have the same rack. I also have the same standard 8 inch tubes giving me an overall height clearance of 9 inches. Are you suggesting, then, to swap out the 8 inch to the 12 inch tubes for the rack directly above the amp? Is the standard 8 inch tube too short as it would still give 2 inches of clearance being the Gen 3 is 7 inches without feet?
My rack has the silver pillars and Sanus, according to the link posted above, has discontinued the silver 12 inch tubes. I suppose it won't look bad if I have to get them in black. I have found them for $25 for a set from both Adorama Camera and B and H Photo. Surprisingly, Amazon wants $35 for a set.

My eight inch pillars, in my opinion, did not offer enough clearance. Each shelf the amps sit on have 12 inch pillars in my system. Good Luck.

I was wondering if I should give it more air space. Actually, this has given me a chance to think about my rack setup a bit. I just recently redid the configuration of my whole system and removed an extra Onkyo HT and Onkyo stereo receiver I was using for 2nd zone power and now have two extra shelves I don't need. I also had purchased 2 of these racks to make an extra tall unit when I bought it. I figure I can also buy a couple sets of small 5 inch pillars and put my power management on one shorty and my cable box, Apple TV, and my Ethernet switch on another by themselves so they are no longer half @ssed stacked on top of my new Marantz.

Thanks for the link moovtune and the model #'s sogm. Found them on Amazon and will be here Friday so that I can get this amp installed this weekend. Killing me that it is just sitting in the box waiting on me.

It's ALWAYS good to provide as much cooling and clearance for ventilation as you can - within the available space. I was wondering if I should give it more air space. Better safe than sorry and those tubes were a lot cheaper than buying a new amp.

This is very true and important for the overall health of your equipment. I will say however that my XPR-5 runs as cool as my XMC-1, AMAZING.

I'm gonna do some mix and match. I should have the separate set of 3 inch pillars meant for the bottom of the bottom shelf that the feet screw into. I can use that for my cable box, Apple TV, and switch shelf. I can get a set of 5 inch for my DVD player, and a second set of 5 inch to put my surge suppressor on, and then a set of the 12 inch for the amp. I will have to completely disassemble the entire rack to redo it but I don't care. I can also eliminate one of the extra shelves I have. I envision this as cool looking when it's done. Only problem, and not really a problem, is that I will have to buy the pillars in black since they discontinued the silver pillars in the 5, 12, and 18 inch sizes. Oddly enough, they still make the same stand in silver that comes with the standard 8 inch pillars. Doesn't make a lot of sense but it should all work. I have the AFA stand.
I would suggest for those of you with the Euro style racks getting the casters to put on the bottom to replace the feet. I did that 5 years ago and it was well worth the hassle.

Ok, got my stand parts. This turned into a project. The diameter of the new pillars was smaller than the ones on my stand. They worked, but apparently my stand is the odd duckling of the Sanus line. My pillars are slightly larger in diameter, and the holes that the all thread goes into is 8 mm. The new parts, the all thread is 1/4 inch. So what to do next? Drill out and tap the new replacement pillars on one side to 8 mm in order to get them to thread back to back with my existing stand pillars with the larger diameter pillars and 8 mm holes. This had to be done on one side of 8 of the pillars in order to get them to mate up properly at the top and bottom of the short 3 inch silver pillars. I kept one set of 8 inch pillars since Sanus does not sell them as replacements and spray painted them textured black to match the replacement stand finish and was also able to run a 1 foot section of 1/4 inch all thread from the shelf above and below that shelf through the 8mm hole .

With the XPA-2 and XPA-3 I tested the heat sink temperatures with my pyrometer using various shelf spacing. Anything over 50 mm clearance to the next shelf above made no difference to their temperatures. That's with racking open on all 4 sides, although the rear is close to the wall.
Cheers Gary

Cheers Gary I know you've mentioned it before, but those temps were with some music/content playing right? Not idle. I've always wanted to do measurements on my gear but just haven't had a chance. I just figured 1-2U below and 2U above was relatively safe. Appreciate you posting your findings - always helpful!

Not music, a bluray, Blade Runner Directors Cut, 5 tests of 1 hour each (30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm and 70 mm) with time in between to change the shelf spacing, all at the same volume. Don't worry, I was working whilst testing, in my home office on the other side of the house, playing iTunes music. At 50 mm or more spacing the heat sink temperature doesn't change much after half an hour, it just stabilises. At less than 50 mm it creeps upwards, so I stopped testing. Cheers Gary
