Nice little player, but am I the only one bothered by the motor noise between songs? It's not deafening by any stretch, but I expect dead quiet from my transport. Or is that just not realistic? Please weigh in.

I have expectations like you. Unfortunately it appears that this is fairly standard on the ERC-3. They use a DVD transport which runs a lot faster than a CD transport. Hence many seem to report noise. This reported issue has kept me from buying one. Wish I had jumped on a ERC-2 on clearance.

Mine has started to make some noise. I wish someone from Emotiva would chime in.

I just finished reading the lengthier thread on this topic, with no real take-away other than it's a more widespread problem than I first imagined. I'm going to continue to evaluate, and will also try setting a noise barrier of some sort on top of the unit.

I've participated in earlier threads about this, and was hoping that it might fade into being a thing of the past... but if you just acquired this unit, maybe it's still a "feature". I liked mine, but I couldn't handle the noise factor, so traded it in... I was intending to get another one in the future, thinking the transport issue would be resolved, but now I dunno... I'm a big fan of Emotiva, and fond of the folks there, but the ERC-3 noise and the heavy damn armored remote of the XMC-1 leave me a bit baffled... but it's quirky and that I guess, gives them personality and a sort of nostalgic charm for the old scientific instruments of our youth.

Damn thing sounds amazing - very impressed. Got mine today and after reading all these threads about noisy transports, I will admit, I was a little nervous plugging it up. Mine is thankfully very quiet - usual noise I expect loading and switching tracks, but otherwise very quiet. As far as the remote goes, I love the solid feel and weight of them.

I've had 2 ERC-2's and 2 ERC-3's and have enjoyed all of them, neither of my 3's had any motor noise only issue(s) I have had is with one of the 2's when the display went out and my "1st generation" ERC-3 had a bit of difficulty downloading the Hybrid SACD firmware and it had the re-badged ERC-2 remote.

My ERC-3 is very quiet, I've measured it many times and it's way below ambient. Even with the mic placed right up to the load tray I haven't been able to get a reading above ambient. There's absolutely no chance that I could hear it from my usual listening position 1.5 metres away.
Cheers Gary

I have two ERC-3s, and both are dead quiet. I have heard zero motor-noise on either of them, and I'm actually surprised to learn of its existence. While those who are experiencing this problem, have all my sympathies, I feel confident in saying that this particular issue is not unavoidable. Emo should be able to help with this if called.

I'm going to continue to evaluate, and will also try setting a noise barrier of some sort on top of the unit. I haven't chimed in on this for over a year and I'm still listening to my noisy ERC-3. I tried a noise barrier by adding a sheet of felt inside the transport case but it made no difference. I also tried to loosen a couple of the transport "springs" that seemed to be in a bind but no difference. Just at a loss to understand how the ballast built into the unit could have any effect on a transport that rattles. Still sounds great until I try listening to music with quiet passages.

Since you have had the cover off, have you tried to isolate the exact point of the noise generation? For that sort of stuff I use a mechanics stethoscope, cost about $10 on EBay.
Cheers Gary

I still wonder if there is an ERC-4 in the future... If so I'd like to see a USB port that can handle lossless files like flac and wav.

Cheers Gary I remember thinking that the noise was generated by the tracking mechanism rather than the drive motor. It has never been consistent with a particular disc so there doesn't appear to be any connection there. Since I probably voided my warranty by opening the unit I sure didn't want to tear into the tracking unit.

My ERC-3 is silent so I have no points of comparison there, but a few years back my uncle's Revox reel to reel was making a click, click, noise. He had sent it in for servicing but it came back with the same problem, the usual comment "couldn't duplicate". He pestered me until I grabbed the stethoscope from the tool box, went over to his place and worked my way around the tape path. I eventually isolated it to a bearing in the counter. I marked the loudest spot with a red white board marker, put a sticky label on it and he sent it back to the Distributor. They replaced the counter and no more noise.
My suggestion would be to make a call to Emotiva and explain that you are going to open it up, isolate the exact noise source, label/mark it and then send it in for them to fix. I'd be surprised if they had any problem with that as long as you don't try to fix it yourself and damage it in the attempt.
Cheers Gary

FWIW, I just received an ERC-3 this past week, and if I put my ears very close to the player I can hear some slight spinning, whirring of the drive. I don't find it offensive at least yet and by any measure its much quieter than our projector when running let alone the Vizio TV I use for a computer based music server setting off to the side. The Vizio power supply buzzes way more than the feint ERC-3.
Hope this helps.

Since I probably voided my warranty by opening the unit I sure didn't want to tear into the tracking unit. If it does it while tracking it may be a lubrication issue on the worm and gear. However, if it's only doing it on certain discs you may have an out-of-round or out of balance disc that you wouldn't notice as much at a lower RPM but, as mentioned above, may become more prevalent with the higher RPM of the transport used in the ERC-3. I hear the motor on my ERC-3 at the beginning when it's scanning the disc for info, but not during playback. And, I can hear certain discs that are out of balance/round with my ear near the unit (like up against it) but not from any listening position. Other than that, it's dead silent (listening to it as I type).
