I am having great time with the Emo XMC-1, have even discarded my outboard DAC in favor of the Emo's internal DACs. That said, I would like to play dsf files using Jriver MC21 from my Macmini wired HDMI into the XMC-1. Is this possible? I know it will not work over USB (or am I wrong on that) but it should through HDMI (or am I wrong on that too? ). I have hundreds of dsf files that, I assume, are DSD files with meta data added. Any thoughts on this?
SACDs from my Oppo play direct to DSD just fine - it is a data encryption issue? Is the Oppo looking for some flag that Jriver is not sending in the packets?
Thanks!
Jose

Sadly it is not possible.

There is no way for raw DSD to get out a PC (including Mac's, I believe) over HDMI. USB will allow DSD output, but with only enough bandwidth for two channels, for multichannel DSD, HDMI support is still needed and so should not be ignored by developers who wish to provide all functionality options.
It is technically possible as the HDMI specification allows for it and some HDMI chipsets have the capability supported in the hardware specification (Like the integrated Intel HD Graphics within the CPU's), but the HDMI hardware drivers for the OS need to be written to transmit raw DSD and these do not exist. It would be up to the likes of NVIDIA, Intel and AMD to write the drivers for the operating system and include this functionality.
There is a perfectly acceptable alternative which means that Intel etc do not need to do this. There is enough bandwidth in a 24/192 PCM signal to contain all of the DSD data plus flags and it is then deconstructed back to DSD by the receiving processor. JRiver Media Center can losslessly transcode DSD to DSD-over-PCM (DOP) in real time but sadly the XMC-1 will not accept DOP!
I use JRiver's DSP engine to transcode, on the fly, DSD to 24/176.4 kHz PCM as the most mathematically suitable alterative, but it would be great to have a source perfect DSD option and the most feasible is for an SSP such as the XMC-1 to accept DOP. I don't know if the reason why the XMC-1 can't is a hardware limitation of the HDMI input chipset or a lack of firmware support.

An Oppo BDP-10x player will send DSF files to the XMC from a connected hard drive or thumb drive.

An Oppo BDP-10x player will send DSF files to the XMC from a connected hard drive or thumb drive. Does that work also from the network interface? The GUI is rather painful, of course, but this might be an option for the OP if it does...

But only the 10x series can be used this way. Results may vary base on wireless speeds. I have a Wireless AC network that gets over 120 in Speedtest and can stream anything I've thrown at it. A wired connection would work very well.

I use JRiver to stream DSF files to an Oppo BDP-103. HDMI2 of the Oppo is connected to an HDMI input on the XMC-1. I see the DSD signal light on the front panel of the XMC-1. It works with Stereo and Multi-Channel DSD files.
Now I am trying to see if I can use the XMC-1 as a USB DAC that accepts DSD. Anyone know if this works?
