According to the manual, I'd expect these buttons to select Dolby PLIIx Movie or Music, but they seem to do nothing for me (it just re-selects whatever audio mode is already selected). Is it a known issue? I'm testing with an audio only input (Optical2) if that helps. I can select these two modes just fine using Mode Up and Mode Down.

I never use the XMC-1 remote, I'd have to locate it and see what happens.

You have to already be in a Dolby PLIIx or DTS Neo mode, and then it will switch between the Music / Movie sub-modes of that type (PLIIx Movie or Music, or Neo Cinema or Music). That makes sense now.

PLIIx takes 2.0 or 5.1 and changes its to 7.1 so if you have only 5.1 it wont be available.

PLIIx can be selected with 5.1 or 2.0 material and output 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1. And since we are talking about the XMC, it's pertinent to the OP's question. "Note: Some Matrix Surround Sound processing modes are not appropriate to use with certain types of input signals, and some may conflict with certain other modes. For example, Dolby PLIIx may be used to transform stereo analog content into 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel surround sound content, and may be used to transform 5.1 channel Dolby Digital or Dolby TrueHD content into synthesized 7.1 channel content, but cannot be used with 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD content (because it is already 7.1 channels). The XMC-1 will ONLY allow you the option of choosing modes that are appropriate for your current signal source and mode."And this is from a Denon site: "Dolby Pro Logic IIx is a complete surround field solution featuring Movie and Music modes that function with 5.1 encoded material as well as stereo (LPCM) source material. It delivers a natural surround listening environment for simulating 5.1 from a stereo based LPCM input signal and can simulate 6th and 7th channels as an add on to a standard 5.1 Dolby Digital encoded track. This simulation is done by taking the 4th and 5th (Surround) channels and duplicating them to the Surround Back channels creating a full 7.1 theater environment."denon.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/437/~/dolby-pro-logic-iix-(pliix)Maybe PLIIx is an enhancement to PLII and can do everything PLII can and then some...

And the XMC's manual says PLIIx can simulate 5.1 from stereo. So is PLII a subset of PLIIx? Matrix Surround Sound processing modes like Dolby PLIIx and DTS Neo:6 use information in the audio signal itself to create additional audio channels from the channels already present. These processing modes can be used to recreate multi-channel audio from stereo content that was specifically encoded for them - although, unlike with discrete surround sound formats, the result will only be an approximation of the original. Originally, various Matrix Surround Sound formats were used to deliver surround sound content; today virtually all surround sound content is encoded in one of the discrete formats. Today, these modes are most commonly used as post processing modes to synthesize extra channels, either to transform stereo music into 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel surround sound, or to transform discrete 5.1 channel surround sound into synthesized 7.1 channel surround sound. The XMC-1 will offer you the option of choosing various Matrix Surround Sound Processing Modes where appropriate.
And the XMC does allow one to use PLIIx on a stereo signal on a 5.1 system and does indeed send music to all channels. And Music and Movie modes are selectable.

PLIIx takes 2.0 or 5.1 and changes its to 7.1 so if you have only 5.1 it wont be available. Sorry socketman, but that isn't the case. PLIIx is available with a 5.1 setup and can create 5.1 from 2.0. Not according to dolby or my own experience. until I added 7.1 it was not an option.( I think LOL ) From Dolby Dolby Pro Logic IIx expands stereo or 5.1-channel audio to 6.1- or 7.1-channel sound, and lets you customize audio playback with listening modes designed specifically for movies, music, and games

The XMC display in the middle column says PLIIx Music on the top and PCM 2.0 right below that. And using the Movie and Music buttons I can switch between PLIIx Music snd PLIIX Movie. Just don't know how to make it any plainer. Maybe I should use some big color fonts...

OK
From the manual. It clearly states that it will change 2.0 music to 7.1 or 5.1 but will only take 5.1 to 7.1 with discrete 5.1 content.
Today, these modes are most commonly used as post processing modes to synthesize extra channels, either to transform stereo music into 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel surround sound, or to transform discrete 5.1 channel surround sound into synthesized 7.1 channel surround sound. The XMC-1 will offer you the option of choosing various Matrix Surround Sound Processing Modes where appropriate.
and even with all this its no help to the OP since his problem is the buttons do not do anything, I should have read his post closer but I got caught up in the moment.
btw I didn't come here to fight just to try to help so please don't be snippy , the red was just so it could be differentiated from the rest of the text so don't read anything else in to it. Keith said the same thing I did ,so though it is working on 2.0 for you its still correct what I said was based on movies since I don't synthesize my 2.0 I like it the way it is.
To the OP I would power cycle your XMC and see if that helps, also check that all your speakers are set correctly for the input you are using.

Richard Richard, I've been trying to say how the buttons work. When in PLIIx, the movie and music buttons change modes from PLIIx Movie to PLIIx Music. They work exactly as intended even with 2.0 material and on a 5.1 system. And the OP even posted that it does indeed work for him when in PLIIx. And Keith also wrote the manual which you just quoted above so I guess he said that, too. FWIW, I don't care for PLIIx either but that doesn't change what it does or how it works on the XMC. All I did was respond to the OP's question to which he responded was correct. The fact is that PLIIx can be used with a 5.1 system.

All I am saying if he is playing 2.0 music he should get to select pl2 music or movie but if he is playing 5.1 and doesn't have 7.1 he wont get those options.

He thought the Music ans Movie buttons were supposed to select PLIIx Movie or Music from whatever mode he was in. But they do not do that. They will only switch between Movie and Music sub modes if you are already in PLIIx or dtsNeo:6 to begin with. They are simply a sub mode selector for those two listening modes and nothing more.
