Im saving for my xmc-1. I measured the slot that the pre/pro sits. Its 6 inches. The xmc-1 is 5.75 tall with feet. MY question is what is the minimal space needed. I know 2 inches should be the minimal but a lot of people put their unit in cabinets. S0?

Mine have 3 inches of space between the shelf over and it's not too much, sometime I pass my hand over to feel the temperature and I found that it runs on the hot side. Keep in mind that the XMC-1 is basically a computer and it needs a lot of natural convection cooling because it's not equipped with noisy cooling fans that we all don't wanna hear. When people place this unit in a rack mount, they must reserve at least 1RU free space over the XMC-1 or if not, they must using a fan cooling system.

I have 3in of space as well as a fan setup and my XMC-1 is completely cool to the touch. Heat is electronics worst enemy, so keeping components cool will give you peace of mind and extend the life of the component.

2 to 3 inches for any component is a good rule. The heat has to go somewhere. So anytime you can have more clearance, it is never a bad thing. Just avoid blocking the vents in any case. For the record, I have about almost 6 inches above mine just pure convection, no fans etc.

I haven't tested an XMC-1, but Emotiva power amps (XPA-1L, XPA-2, XPA-3 and XPA-5) don't show any heat difference once the shelf separation goes beyond 50 mm. That's measured with a pyrometer on the heat sinks in a rack open on 4 sides.
Cheers Gary

For us in the USA 50mm is about 2 inches.

I have mine on top of an open rack. I've never detected much difference in temperature from ambient with it in that position. For components that don't have heat sinks I've found that as long as there's room for air to circulate from the bottom to the top, it should be fine. More is better; but not always necessary.

Mine sits in the rack with about 1 inch height space between the above shelf for over a year now. But the XMC-1 is just little warm to the touch and no problem so far. My rack has open to the back with glass front cover. So I think you are going to be ok with your space.

For us in the USA 50mm is about 2 inches.
What a coincidence. I'm in the UK, but for us in the rest of the world, 50mm is also about 2 inches.
However, we prefer to use the metric system for anything technical because then 50mm is exactly 50mm, and 50.8mm is exactly that.
The imperial system is only officially used for measuring certain body parts when a little obscurity may be preferred!
