Yesterday in an attempt to resolve an intermittent lip sync problem on BD & DVD to my PJ I backed up my settings, did a factory reset and restored my settings. This appears to have cured the lip sync problem but ARC from my TV has stopped working; TV audio stays on the TV speakers not through the system.
With the TV on, the XMC-1 switched to the HDMI ARC input and using the TV volume control, the TV would normally flash up a notification that volume was controlled by the XMC-1. Since the reset, the TV volume control controls the TV volume. Disc playback from my BD player through the XMC-1 to the TV works as expected.
I didn't touch any cabling, didn't change any settings from what I'd backup up and didn't change anything on the TV. There was only one backup on the USB stick; the backup I'd just made before the factory reset. The TV has not had a firmware update for a while.
I've tried turning both the TV and the XMC-1 off at the mains, unplugging and re-plugging the TV's HDMI cable at both ends, and another backup and factory reset. I tried the HDMI ARC input before restoring my settings to see if they were causing a problem, but still no ARC. Restoring my settings and turning the XMC-1 on/off didn't bring ARC back either. Comparing today's backup with yesterdays, they are identical so I can presumably rule out settings corruption.
As far as I can see, there are no settings on the XMC-1 that specifically enable ARC. The manual mentions that some TVs need CEC enabled on the XMC-1 to work but mine never has and Setup > HDMI CEC Enabled has always been set to off. I tried setting it to on but that made no difference.
I'm stumped. Has anyone else had similar problems and found a fix? The XMC-1 is running firmware 3.1a and the TV is a Samsung UE46ES8000.

Two years ago I vaguely remember not being able to consistently get the ARC input on my Panasonic plasma to play nicely with my other CEC capable components(Oppo BDP-93/XMC-1) and it was at that point that I went with an Amazon FireTV to replace the app source in the plasma. Hopefully you get yours back up and running and when/if you do, please let us know what the fix is.

ARC has been working since day 2 on my rig, that's 15 months without a hitch. Day 1 I'd plugged the cable into the non-ARC HDMI port on the TV . I've tried swapping out the AVP to TV HDMI cable, no change. Reloading 3.1a firmware, no change. The TV has a Receiver setting currently set to Off and greyed out. Documentation on that is almost non-existent but from memory I think it should allow you to enable the ARC device. Being greyed out leads me to think the TV doesn't know its connected to a receiver. I can't remember; can I roll back to 3.1 or 3.0?

Well, I've tried the 'unplug everything from the mains and leave it overnight' trick. No change, no ARC.
I've also double checked my XMC-1 HDMI CEC settings, which are the same as they have been for months, and my TV AnyNet+ settings. Ditto. I even tried all the different combinations of both. No change.
Looks like I'll be talking to Emotiva next week.

There's something very screwy going on here.
Playing music and watching movies over the weekend, everything sounded subjectively louder for the same volume setting since the factory reset.
I've just measured my Dirac levels which I'd carefully set with an SPL a while ago. They are still set to the values I used but with the same SPL they are all between 4 and 6db higher than they should be.

I spoke to Emotiva yesterday. They said ARC works if the settings at each end are correct and doesn't if they are not. Oddly, My XMC-1 has never needed HDMI CEC enabled for ARC to work so has always been disabled (I checked my backups). Enabling it made no difference. They also said whether it works or not on any particular day depends on the order of equipment turn on.
I've tried every conceivable combination of CEC settngs and turn on order with no success. I'll reset the TV over the weekend and see if that brings it back. I'm not looking forward to that task as I'll need to set up all my sat channels again.
Emotiva said they are happy for me to send the unit in for checking. As shipping will cost me €150 from here, I'd rather use that for when the upgrades come out next year. If all else fails, maybe the upgrades will bring ARC back.

Stuff like this really sux. This should be so simple. Let us know what happens when you reset your TV. I got lucky when I got my latest TV , it worked pretty much as expected and I had no idea wtf I was doing LOL . I turned something on in the TV and set the XMC to ARC and it worked. I have to agree with you, it must be something with the TV since it is not behaving as expected as you described above. GL
Sometimes weird things do happen, I just moved and when I hooked my bedroom stuff up I watched shows off my server but when I tried watching my dvr I had no picture. I changed some hdmi cables around and then it was fine and to me that doesn't make any sense. Gotta love electronics.

Thanks. Unfortunately the TV doesn't find the XMC-1 when I do a refresh on the AnyNet+ device list.
Can someone tell me how to get the top off. Looking through the gaps there's a lot of dust in there and I remember that used to cause weird problems with my MC-12. A gentle dust removal always fixed them.
I've got the 2 back bolts and the 3 top side bolts for each side but the top appears to be held at the front centre by something.

Never trusted HDMI doing for me what a good programmable remote can do.
Like you (with different gear) had this very same thing happen and just got frustrated and bought a harmony remote to do the switching and volume control in a proper manner.
Even issues with all same manufactures can happen so I just don't rely on it.
My harmony always works and even if it misses a sync, the help feature sorts it all back in place again.

I use a Harmony too so I'm not interested in one piece of equipment's remote being able to control another. All I was using of CEC is ARC. I need to get the XMC-1 on the bench so I can take a better look at what's holding the front of the top cover. It looks to me like a small silver threaded bolt. Maybe a loose one from manufacturing that has got itself jammed in there

There's a small lug front centre of the top cover, about 2cm wide and 3mm deep. Although it feels like its captive, it does slide out when the lid is at the right angle.
Inside now free of dust and the TV has been reset but still no ARC.
I give up. I'm going to buy a 10m optical cable.

FWIW , I had trouble getting ARC working again once I set up my stuff at the new house. The manual implies both HDMI outs are ARC but in the end I used HDMI 1 and it finally started working. I gotta write this stuff down, goddamn memory LOL

Socketman is correct. "..., HDMI Out 1 is ARC and CEC enabled." Taken from page 68 of the online manual.

The rear of the unit is poorly marked and I have the preliminary manual and it makes it sound like they both are ARC compatible. Like I say, I need to make notes my memory just isn't what it once was.
