Is there a way to make the XMC-1 stop changing audio modes between 5.1 and 2.0 while watching DirecTV? Every time the sound format changes on a channel the XMC-1 has an audio dropout until it switches between the 2.0 and 5.1 formats. On channels that are constantly changing between the two during commercials it is very obnoxious to listen to. My old $499 Sony receiver never had an issue with this so it seems odd that the XMC-1 can't prevent the audio dropout.

If you go into the Inputs menu and select your DirectTV input, there should be two mode settings; one for 2.0 and one for 5.1. You could set them to the same thing, say PLIIx.

What is your current sound setting for the DirecTV input? I will have to check mine, but I thought it was set to Auto and haven't noticed this. I will have to double check as I set it up quite a while ago.

I have tried setting them both to prologic movie and also putting them both on auto but I always get that audio stumble when the program switches between 2.0 and 5.1 sound modes. The prologic modes give me a nasty static click each time it switches between modes so I don't use that setting.

Is your DirecTV box setup for for Dolby Digital in the settings menu? Thats the solution with our pvr's down in Aus . If the Directtv box has an option to turn off the dolby digital bitstream the box should mix down everything to 2.0 lpcm avoiding switching to dd5.1 every commercial break Its something our thoughtful free to air broadcasters leave as 5.1 for the commercials [ even though its not encoded as such for the adds] leaving any switching flags out of the stream ; due to viewer complaints of db levels etc. Cant say why its different for satellite feeds though -

Is your DirecTV box setup for for Dolby Digital in the settings menu? My box is set to Dolby Digital because that is how most of the programming is encoded as. I can turn it off but what's the point of spending a ton of money on surround sound equipment then. It is only an issue when ads come an and they are a random selection of audio formats. The XMC-1 seems really slow to figure out which audio format it keeps getting and what to change to.

I was simply curious if it was turned on as I have seen sound issues in surround sound systems where the Dolby Digital was set to off as that is the default setting.

It was set to off by default on the DirecTV Genie box. The problem seems to be within Emotiva's design because both the XMC-1 and the UMC-200 have had the same issue with being slow to change formats. The UMC-200 was really bad at being slow changing audio formats during commercials. Maybe the XMC-1 can be fixed with a firmware update.

I've had the same problem with my Dish Hopper, for non-related reasons I just upgraded from a Hopper to Hopper 3, if anything it's worse, but probably the same. This thread has prompted me to start paying more attention to when it happens, and what my settings are. For one thing I seem to notice it more often on "cable" channels, USA, TNT, BBCA, I hear it much less on the networks, probably due to more consistent productions quality. Currently on that input both 2.0 and 5.1 are set to PLIIx, and the Hopper is set to "Dolby Passthrough" ON.
