Hi
I realize this has been asked before, however I was wondering if more people are experiencing audio drop out with their ERC-3? For me it happens at the exact same place on each CD. So far about 8 CD's. This is my 2nd ERC-3 and both did the same thing. Went sent back to Emotiva they were also able to duplicate the same issues.
I am keeping my player anyway because it sounds so damn good and I can live with the occasional drop out. Just hoping it does not get worse.
Regards, Howie

Are the dropouts limited to the digital outputs? How about the analog outputs?

Hello Howie:
I'm an unlucky owner of a noisy ERC-3 and have noticed "pops" occasionally. What does your audio dropout sound like? I have been putting off investigating the problem figuring it could be anywhere in my system. You are right about putting up with a few problems in return for the terrific sound of the unit.

Hi Guys
Not sure if my responses got to you successfully so I will try again just in case.
Digital outputs and Analog outputs - not sure what you mean, sorry. What I can tell you is that I use the ERC-3 with my XDA-2 via Toslink and also use the analog outputs at the moment while I decide which may sound better. Either way I get the drop outs. Drop Outs - Is an aprox 1 sec silence on certain CDs at the exact same place, no pops. My unit is quiet so far - keeping fingers crossed Howie

The digital outputs are the ERC-3's coax, toslink and aes/ebu outputs, which would be using your XDA-2. The ERC-3 DAC would use the unbalanced RCA or balanced XLR analog outputs. Interesting that you are getting the dropouts with both digital and analog outputs. I'd be curious to know when you sent it back to Emotiva and they were able to duplicate your dropouts, what did they attribute the dropouts to?

Well, the first ERC-3 I purchased was way back when it first came out. When I got the drop outs, I returned the CD player along with the CD's that were giving me issues.
Emotiva were not able to explain why there was a problem and even tried another player they had - same issue. My ERC-1, which I also owned at the time had no problem playing the CD's.
So it seems some discs are causing this problem with the ERC-3, not sure if it is the laser or what. My new ERC-3 (2 weeks old ) does the same thing - same CD's.
My CD's are in new condition. I have decided to just keep the ERC-3 and hope only a few CD's have issues.

Thanks for the reply, Howie. I haven't had an audio dropout like you describe so will work at narrowing down my "pops." They are infrequent and sound exactly like an LP pop or click.

I have had a couple of CDs that would 'skip' at certain places. Always the same place. I put them in my Grant CD and no skip. I cleaned the CD read surface and voila no more skips.

Clean your CD's and make sure they are not all scratched I have an ERC-3 and have had 2 ERC-2s in the past...From my experience when there is a rare tracking issue the sound drops out unlike other cd/transports I've owned when there is an issue they get hung-up they sound like a needle stuck on a record...For me every issue of a drop out was directly attributed to a faulty disc...

Thanks to all for your replies.
My discs have been cleaned over and over. As I mentioned earlier, Emotiva experienced the same issues. I do think it is the disc(s) that are causing the drop outs and for whatever reason, the ERC-3 will not play them, however other CD players (including the ERC-1) can no problem.. The good news, it's a rare occurrence and I love the sound of the ERC-3, so it's a keeper. Howie

Pretty resonable folks to accept pops and audio drops from a $500 high-end audiophile-grade CD player. Good for you. Be sure not to play one of those tracks when you give a demo at your next dinner party.
CD players aren't cutting edge technology. That would be completely unacceptable, IMO.
