On my setup, it seems only to occur in 2 channel mode, not surround. My XMC-1 is hooked to a computer and has HDMI and S/PDIF in from different sound cards. If I use S/PDIF which is stereo only, I get the auto-muting thing where below a certain level mutes kick in and there can be some popping or crackling as the signal comes and goes with the mutes toggling on and off. When I switch over to HDMI which is a 7.1 signal, no issue, the unit never auto-mutes so there's no noise even when the signal fades out. However, when I switched HDMI to 2.0 for awhile since I'd removed one of my amps, the issue starts up again, low level signals mute and you get the popping.
I haven't done full testing on all modes or anything, but it does seem to be related to the number of channels on the input signal, as stereo exhibits consistent behaviour across both inputs, which are driven by different cards (HDMI is driven by a GTX 980Ti, S/PDIF by a Scarlett 6i6).
