Some thoughts on the possible S15 Sub-woofer that Dan spoke of in the last podcast.
Why not a passive sub with a XPA GEN-3 double wide sub amp?
No pots, rather an USB connection to set the parameters via an app. Pot setting are so inaccurate!

Interesting idea Chuck, personally I preferred a powered sub, and I think a majority of customers also, but they could offer the option between passive or powered.

I would go powered sub. I know of no popular non powered audiophile subs. I doubt Emotive will change this belief. Also who wants to add another amp?

Emotiva had talked long ago about a stand alone sub amp. I don't think the cost would be much more with the plate amps moved to a different location. Unless the S15 is a servo design it could be used with any sub. I think plate amps are in the worst location for electronics. If I was worried about the number of amps, I'd own a receiver.

I'm a HUGE proponent of separates for subs. Especially when i had a JBL Venue 12 have the plate amp crap out on me. Fried the amp board (a known recurring problem with the model) but it was outside of warranty and discontinued while only 3 years old. Cabinet, fine, speaker, fine, amp, fried and odd size so that it was impossible to find any replacement. I was rather industrious though. bought a external sub amp, and resoldered the high level inputs on the dead plate amp to run directly to the speaker inside so that i could just hook up the high levels to the new external sub amp. Works like a charm! Just goes to show how much better we all would be with separate components so if one part dies then you don't have to scrap the whole kit!

The S15 is there Airmotiv line of subwoofer. Rory Buszka who now works for Emotiva was involved with Thiel's Intellisub. We may see the very thing that Chuck Elliot is referring too in the future from Emotiva. Yes I remember that Subwoofer system with separate amplifier and DSP. DYohn brought this same thing up in another thread and I mentioned it to @roryb in that thread. www.stereophile.com/content/thiels-new-intellisub#IRbEQIdP5lovf6eG.97

I always wondered, in that picture are they removing the speaker or installing it? I'm guessing trying to install but it won't fit through the door
Cheers Gary

Are these piling up at headquarters? Need to push them out, or did I just ruin the Emofest surprise? 😎

Are these piling up at headquarters? Need to push them out, or did I just ruin the Emofest surprise? 😎 Nick, all I can think is they have so many projects going they can not afford for everything to be built all at once. Big Dan is kid just like us. Us kids are just adults with big toys. We want everything and we want it now. Big Dan does not have a grand plan. A big subwoofer came out in his mind a long time ago and when they build it and ship it, we will have it.
