So this technique will only work/can only work with recordings that were made with general room mic-ing. The way we mic drums for instance in our auditorium can't achieve this level of spatial information as each drum/cymbal is individually mic'd. An overhead will provide some spatial information but in my experience there is no way to add/adjust spatial information beyond pan (left/right). Granted I've never been in a professional studio...but to achieve this kind of "soundstage" depends on the recording containing that soundstage information.
I'm willing to bet MOST of my music (ROCK) was never recorded with this goal in mind.
