It's a humid, lazy day after a storm to just stay in and listen to music. (drink some vino) Today my UMC-200 blew, I mean it literally blew up. Unit faulted out so I powered off 120v, power back up then POW. I mean a loud pow, my wife heard it on the other side of the house. I disconnected everything and removed it from AV center and heard something rattling around and thought omg a screw fell into it. Opened it up and low & behold a capacitor with no legs floating around inside. Thank Emo for a 5 yr warranty.
I hooked up a Denon DRA-395 (used to source out to partio & garage) as a temp stand-alone.. wife didn't like it. So I pre-amp out (zone out) to XPA-5. Wife (nor I) still didn't like it. Guess that says something about the sound quality of the UMC. We are in my office listening to music through Denon AVR-5700...aah much better. Have to admit this old Denon 5700 sounds great... not Emo great but really good. It's powerful enough to supply the whole house with music. We are gonna have to bare it for a few weeks while Emo fixes us up.

Stuff happens! Glad nothing else went wrong. Like any good audiophile, we all have a backup plan. Call in first thing Monday morning and get her shipped off, you'll be back to normal in no time!

LOL - My backup plan is to drive to novisnick's, have him feed me, and then borrow his spare stuff until I get mine working again! He's good about things like that. Really! It's good to have nice friends.

After dinner, my wife asked "Aren't you going to order the XMC we listened to in Dallas" I don't know how anyone could interpret that any other way than- get on the phone. (smiles) May wait until the A-300 is available to go with the order; can't have the UMC sitting in a box (sell Denon DRA-395)

A pop like that would certainly get your attention. Where do you live? I'm selling my XMC. Orig owner and mint shape. ~ 2 yrs old. Scott Only used in my theater:

Scott, I live south of Dallas. What are you looking to replace with? I was considering a Marantz (has analogue in) and add miniDSP That XMC-1 Factory Renewed is hard to beat.

Cool, I actually visit Houston, Austin and Brenham each year as we do a lot of business with a company based there. We're looking at going again in Nov. At any rate, I'm looking at another Anthem. Have the MRX 710 upstairs and it's fantastic. I also like the menu better than the XMC although the XMC is a wonderful unit. I'd have to beat the renewed as I saw the price. I'd have to be in the $1300 delivered range to compete. Scott

UMC-200s are notorious for CAP issues. Most simply fail, but others...not so much.
Emo should have done a recall, but...

But then again, I'm dating myself. Thinking about older, simpler preamps that were far more basic doing much less and with smaller power supplies, etc. Emotiva will get you back on track. Hope I never experience that with the XMC Bill

How long does it take to get a "return authorization" ?? I've been waiting all day after a phone call AND an email Bill, I find Cap failure running rampant in electronics today, especially in power supplies. When I serviced Audio many yrs ago, transistors were the biggest failure. A tip for everyone- if your monitor dies, replace all the caps in the power supply with higher voltage caps- cost $10-15 to $20 lcdalternatives.com/ is a good place to start.

A major complaint- D & M owned Escient who declared bankruptcy 7/2015. In doing so, all operations ceased including their proxy servers. Escient units connect to those servers for metadata and software updates. If you have a software problem and are fortunate enough to have a "golden image" to reload/repair the OS, you can fix your problem. With D&M shutting down their server, they have made these units useless; not because the hardware failed but no software support. If new CDs are imported, the metadata is useless without connecting to a server. D&M also owns McIntosh which markets basically the same units and their products are functioning as designed. D&M in their infinite wisdom did NOTHING to redirect the Escient units to the McIntosh servers so they can function. Escient units sold for $2000 up to $8000? and those of us who dished out cash are screwed. All service has been sub'd out, sold to a horrible service company; why didn't the servers get transferred too??? Heck even MS XP will still work without their support. I have made a decision to never purchase anything from D&M again; don't care how good it is- including Denon or Marantz AVxxxx. Service- there is a difference with whom you choose to do business with. Customers have rights too!!!
Sincerely, Very pissed-off consumer
Very happy with Emo so far.
