At $100 there aren't a lot of "amazing" DACs. There are some decent units but not necessarily something incredible. There is the Schiit Modi or the audioquest dragonfly. Or for a bit more there is the asus xonar essence st (which by the way is pretty darn nice)

Oh yeah those as well are good choices at the price range. What would I do? Hmmmm......honestly...if I wasn't planning on upgrading, I would go the DAC and airmotiv 6s route. Even though a sub may get you more bass....at that price range, it may not be good bass. While the airmotiv...the bass it will provide will be good bass.

Well here's how i think of it....a receiver is a throw away device imo. However...if you ever upgrade your speakers so is the airmotivs. You lose the amps either way. If it was me and it was just a PC....DEPENDING ON HOW NEARFIELD I would select the airmotivs and just toy with the size. Another choice is to buy a nice set of headphones and headphone amp. For instance get a Schiit $100 headphone amp and a Emotiva ego and a refurbished pair of sennheiser HD600's - and have a great time

I think, with those 2 options, you will be compromising "something". With the sub, you will probably get a little lower bass, but not necessarily "good bass", and a "$100 receiever" doesn't exactly inspire confidence in sound quality With the airmotiv and dac approach, the sound that you hear will sound really good, just don't expect a ton of window shaking bass. So like Garbulky, my choice (of the two you listed), would be airmotiv + dac.

I can highly recommend the Ego & Airmotive combo, there is no better value for money sound proposition and let the available budget determine the size.
Cheers Gary
