Is this going to provide streamer functions that are similar to those of the Sonore MicroRendu? That is going to be my recommendation.

May I suggest that you go to the Volumio web site to get an idea of what this unit will be able to do.

Especially considering, UPnP/DNLA is broken from start. IMO the feature set is not that weak and more than covers what the majority of users want. Also at this point we don't know what Emotiva might add. Volumio II has a very rich facility for including add-ins. Many of the Debian services can also be used including SAMBA and SSH. I imagine CUPS could be used for printing too! Note: Volumio II is not quite finished although it is released. Their forum is filled with minor bugs.

one very important feature to me, only reason why I stay on LMS : the random mix by track/album/artist with selected genres! didn't find an equivalent on any other platform... maybe that will win the last LMS users ;o)

It is obvious no manufacture has to date made an affordable network streamer with the most popular sites( Spotify- Tidal- Pandora and XM. Do this with an internal Dac with external storage for files in a thin full width chassis . Build it and they will come

Emotiva Ex-Stream 100. Will be ready all popular formats. Music will always be true Emotiva Blue. Others will be blue with envy. Can't wait.

Take a Aurender and copy it. Features done Well, there's a first decision. The Aurender is a media server/DAC/Pre amp. Is this what we want an Emo-streamer to be??? Or, do we want output to our existing/coming DACs.

I'd rather have an output in digital realm to external DAC in addition to the obvious choices (Toslink, SPdif and USB) I'd really like to see an I2S output option (hdmi and RJ45) Maybe a card doing one or the other?

I think the community will have fun tweaking a product like this, assuming ssh and root privileges are left available. It will be good to see a more affordable streamer become available as most options besides the Chromecast Audio cost an arm and a leg or are just too DIY. I was curious about how licencing works with the pi and found the following: www.raspberrypi.org/blog/starting-a-business-with-a-raspberry-pi/The pi team does good work. I realize that this streamer might be low margin but I'd love to see a few bucks go back in support. Anyways, the community engagement for new products here is awesome so thank you. I'm excited to hear more.

You don't have to have a RPI to use this music streamer, Volumio. It can be built on an Intel NUC box, a Gigabyte BRIX box or any x86/x64 system that you have.
I have problems understanding what value Emotiva can add to either platform beyond what is already there.
This is why I anxiously await Emotiva starting the poll thread mentioned previously.

Not everyone is willing/able to dig in and build it themselves. What emotiva can offer is an appliance that just works. Like buying a CD player. Hopefully at a price well below the bryston offering.

As a few people have already commented..... the actual functionality is only part of the picture. The basic Volumio software is free, but we would probably be adding some extra custom functionality.... (probably multi-room capabilities and some streaming services clients) And then there are things like metalwork (the case) and controls and maybe a screen of some sort.... And the Pi runs on a wall wart..... Here's the Raspberry Pi that's on my desk now.... Raspberry Pi 3 ($35) + plastic case (about $6) + wall wart ($10) + microSD card (about $7) + Volumio (free)..... If you can find a home for it in your stereo rack just the way it is, you can have what you see (minus the USB stick) for about $60.... If you prefer a nice case, maybe an inboard power supply, and some nice connectors, and maybe a screen.... And some custom software.... Then that's the value-add we'll be selling you. Absolutely..... although I would point out one thing..... Volumio runs perfectly on the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi is very small and very cheap. It also already includes Ethernet, USB, HDMI, WiFi, and BlueTooth..... and you can buy add-on boards that give you S/PDIF output, analog output, and even a small stereo amp - each for less than $50. Therefore, if you only want to run Volumio, as a "headless music client", then a more powerful platform would be a waste of space and money. (I've heard that a Pi really can't run Volumio along with anything else, for example a web browser, so more power would be justified for more complicated installations.) Mine is connected directly to my XMC-1 via USB - and it works flawlessly for local playback (it can talk to the XMC-1 with no extra drivers, and it can read music files directly from a local NTFS USB hard drive).

View AttachmentYes...I fully understand that, Keith. And I believe Chuck understands that even better than I do. What I am looking for, and I think I safely speak for Chuck and others in this is...what, specifically, will the value add actually be. We understand, in theory, that there can be value add. Until I see what it truly adds and what it costs me, I just can't get excited. Frankly, for me, Emotiva is competing with Sonos. The only thing they don't do is hi res and have an awesome DAC built in. I don't care about an awesome built in DAC as I have an awesome DAC or two. The sonos multi-room integration is top notch, the integration of numerous streaming sources is great, the interface is fool prrof to the point that my wife and two teens use it and never get mad at it, its ability to take a line in an integrate it is convenient and useful, and the price for a Sonos connect is not bad. So, I await seeing what Emotiva adds above and beyond what Sonos already does for me. Others have different requirements and current benchmarks, but Sonos is mine. Mark
