Listening to the latest Podcast has answered that question for me; The design philosophy from Dan and Lonnie was to achieve as much detail and realism as possible, hence some features; A normal CD drive spins at 300 rpm, the ERC-3 drive spins at 1200 rpm. The higher speed plus any warpage or off centre of the CD can result in slight spin noise being heard, there’s nothing wrong with the drive. It features a Class 3 Laser which means tighter beam width, less reflection, higher wave length, higher power output and as a result it sees through scratches and imperfections. Larger memory buffer (Lonnie called it “huge”). The result is less errors, rated by Stereophile as the lowest error concealment rate they ever tested and as close to the theoretically perfect accuracy level as you could get. All of the above means nothing if it doesn’t reproduce, unaltered, the original source material which in my case the ERC-3 does better than anything else I have tried. Cheers Gary Interesting topic here. I have to ask what other CDP's has the ERC-3 been compared to? Not that I doubt your findings but just curious. However I am a bit skeptical regarding off center disc or warped disc, can't recall ever running into this let alone how this might cause some noise within the drive. Thanks

So can I play CDs with this player upside-down? I've honestly never tried it, but there is a magnetic clamp on the sendal so it should be possible. You just can't load and unload it upside down. Lonnie Hi Lonnie.. is there any chance you and emotiva could make a 5 or 10 or 20 disc cd player with the same standards quality as the erc 3.. that way I can just hit play for 4 or more hours.. would really love a cd player like that.. thanks

Thanks It's the same as an out of balance tire. Just as when your tire is out of balance you get mild to horrendous vibrations in the steering and inside the car. If you never drive fast enough for the balance to become an issue, you never feel it. Same thing with any spinning item. The disc acts just like your car and moves and vibrates. It makes no difference as the data will continue to transfer just fine, but it may become noticeable depending how out of balance it is. And, you can actually spin your disc so fast that the centrifugal force warps and distorts your disc (filmed at high speed) while it's spinning!

However I am a bit skeptical regarding off center disc or warped disc, can't recall ever running into this let alone how this might cause some noise within the drive. Thanks The off centre is easy, it results in an imbalance, there's more disc on one side than the other, think of an out of balance tyre. That creates vibration which can result in noise. Check your CD's, I was amazed at how many of mine had off centre holes, about 0.1% 30'ish in just over 3,000. Warpage, if bad enough, I understand can cause the laser head to move up and down, so the noise is not necessarily spinning but the laser tracking. From memory, compared to other CD's (some also play SACD's, DVD's and BD's); Oppo 93 (in my cousin's system) Oppo 103 (in my system) Oppo 105 (in my system) Panasonic DMP900 and BD60 (in my system) Sony various models (some in my system, some demo) Denon DCD 2020 (demo) Marantz CD 5005, 5006 and 8005 (demo with the same speakers as mine) Yamaha BD677 (in my system) NAD C516 (in a friend's all NAD system but I took my ERC-3 with me and both of us agreed it sounded better than the NAD) To my ears the closest to the ERC-3 was the Marantz 8005 and it was 4 times the price. As mentioned previously, I'm not a fan of the Sabre DAC implementation in the Oppo 105, although many others really like it. Cheers Gary

As mentioned previously, I'm not a fan of the Sabre DAC implementation in the Oppo 105, although many others really like it. Cheers Gary Gary thanks for the info and various comparisons. I agree with you regarding the Sabre DAC having owned a couple of them in various other configurations. I just don't care for the sound of them and thus have stuck with my Oppo 103 instead of the 105. And while I understand the explanation and concept behind off center anything spinning I still can't recall ever owning a disc that was off center let alone warped. Have owned many a disc spinner too from Arcam to Wadia and many in between and none of them created spinning noise so long as the disc was loaded correctly. Traditionally CD's spin at 2X speed what ever that is, and understand the ERC-3 spins, I believe, at 10X speed about the same as most DVDp's. Regardless I am interested in this approach because I am tired of implementing a computer based music server, and considering going back to spinning disc instead. Never thought I would say but it, but recently I am feeling the computer music concept to be more trouble than its worth, especially if you spend all day working with one. Thus far I have used my Oppo 103 coaxed into my DAC the XMC-1 and the DC-1 before that. I am intrigued with the ERC-3 though as a dedicated analog out spinner. As an interesting side note I once read where Paul McGowan owner of PS Audio listens almost entirely to rebook cd's with his system and only on occasion to high res music, i.e. SACD, DVD-A etc.

So right. Lonnie said it in the video awhile back about the ERC-3. The best Emotiva has done yet. And oh yes, the DC-1 is just so good! agreed……… tchaik…………..

That's what we used to say in little league baseball when a hitter had a good eye and could lay off a close pitch that the ump called a ball.

I think your original query about whether BFB is a slow learner is appropriate. He hasn't even learned to put on his toes correctly. Unless he's the literal version of the figurative guy with two left feet.

The off centre suggestion came from a DJ friend of mine (I used to build amps and speakers for him way back) quite a few years ago, so I got out my trusty digital verniers and measured a few. A random selection of old and new, originals and re releases, about 50 or so, revealed only one that had the hole 0.1 mm off centre. So for about a year I left the verniers next to the CD rack and I measured each CD before I played it. The worst one of the 30 or so that I found was over 0.5 mm off centre, most were around 0.2 mm. The off centre CD's are not a big % at around 0.1%, and I couldn't find any common denominator, no one brand, release time (it's no better now than it was in the 80's) etc. I also found a couple where the hole was over sized, so they might also play off centre. I did send my results off to the local distributor of one of the brands and they said it was "within tolerance", so it must not have been totally unknown.
Cheers Gary
