Listening to the latest Podcast has answered that question for me;
The design philosophy from Dan and Lonnie was to achieve as much detail and realism as possible, hence some features;
A normal CD drive spins at 300 rpm, the ERC-3 drive spins at 1200 rpm.
The higher speed plus any warpage or off centre of the CD can result in slight spin noise being heard, there’s nothing wrong with the drive.
It features a Class 3 Laser which means tighter beam width, less reflection, higher wave length, higher power output and as a result it sees through scratches and imperfections.
Larger memory buffer (Lonnie called it “huge”).
The result is less errors, rated by Stereophile as the lowest error concealment rate they ever tested and as close to the theoretically perfect accuracy level as you could get.
All of the above means nothing if it doesn’t reproduce, unaltered, the original source material which in my case the ERC-3 does better than anything else I have tried.

Interesting you say that as I did about the same. I much prefer the styling of my Sherbourn CD-1, and the slot loader I like far better than the tray on the ERC-3 that somehow always seemed to be "in the way". Running the CD-1 into the DC-1 was a better solution than the ERC-3 for me. |

Upgraded to Emo XSP-1 DC-1 with the ERC-2, more love and now , XMC-1 with the ERC-2. I've always preferred slot loaders. My Samsung 3D Blu ray players have them as well. I dont need a piece of gear sticking its tongueout at me!!  |

Personally I prefer tray loaders, I've seen too many CD's get stuck in slot loaders. But ultimately it's the sound that matters and the ERC-3 hits that spot for me. And the weapons grade remote of course  Cheers Gary |

Don't forget about the anti-gravity, ferrous loading mass that is added to reduce harmonics in the electrons as they flow through the air. Lonnie |

I just bought a new ERC-3 since my ERC-2 stopped loading discs. Hope the ERC-3 lasts longer!

So can I play CDs with this player upside-down? I've honestly never tried it, but there is a magnetic clamp on the sendal so it should be possible. You just can't load and unload it upside down. Lonnie |
