Just ordered three-channel (2 speakers + center speaker) XPA get 3. My only source will be Apple TV last generation. Question - how exactly do I connect Apple TV to my XPA?

You can't without a processor of some sort. You would need something that can process the hdmi digital signal. You also would want a volume control I assume.

Does your Apple TV have an optical output (what generation is it?)
If it has an optical output, get a dac/preamp like the DC-1 or XDA-2 and enjoy.

Cancelling my order for XPA gen 3 then. The current generation of Apple TV got rid of the Optical. The previous versions had optical. eternal, we have a multi-channel pre/pro coming out called the MC-700 that would be great to add to that setup!

In your first post you asked how to connect the AppleTV to the XPA-3. You'd have saved a lot of confusion if you had mentioned the DC-1 and you probably would have gotten your answer already. It is important to post ALL of the audio gear involved in a question - especially when you don't list your gear in a sig line. The main reason I even read this thread is I was curious what an XPA Get 3 is.

eternal, you are buying things too quickly A dedicated amplifier such as the XPA can only amplify an audio signal (that's already volume adjusted) to a level suitable for speakers. Usually there's a fixed gain, such as 29db, and cannot be changed. Any volume adjustment needs to be done on the (not amplified signal) before it hits the amplifier. Apple TV has HDMI out. This has video plus audio. The audio part can be straightforward PCM (simple 2 channel audio like CD audio), OR, more likely than not, multi channel digital audio such as Dolby Digital, for which the DC-1 IS NOT ABLE TO DECODE. (This is true even if your apple TV have optical out) For you, you need a device in the middle between the apple TV and the amplifier that can: 1) decode all multi channel audio: Dolby Digital, DTS, etc 2) convert those digital signal to analog form (digital-to-analog converter) 3) input switch (apple TV, in the future: media box, game console, blue-ray player, etc) 4) volume adjustment Unless you are really into two channel CD audio, this will probably not be an DC-1 because it can't decode any of the multi channel audio that your netflix on your apple TV will likely output. The middle device is usually a preamp (which is basically a receiver without the amplifier), typically costing more than a receiver due to less economic of scale (but perhaps sounds a bit better than regular receivers). You can also use a regular receiver, provided it have pre-out, which is the output to connect to dedicated amplifiers. Hope this helps.

My DishNetwork receiver has a 'PCM' ONLY output choice in the menu. So, Too, does my PS3.
Whatever your NetFlix Server is should be looked at for audio output choices.

hosko: Any idea of the sonic consequences of doing such an HDMI->Optical conversion? I'd bet money it's not 'neutral'

Sonicly who knows but mixing 5.1 or 7.1 to stereo won't be great either. I was recommending it, purely saying if he wants to go from an apple tv to a tv via hdmi with an optical split/down-mix that would be the device.
