BEFORE PICS ABOVE...NEW PICS AND COMMENTARY BELOW!
Hello again all.
So here is the story: It appears all my hours of hawking Craigslist has finally paid off! Don't get me wrong I have always been lucky here and there but recently I hit the mother lode! I found an original Thorens TD 125 LB (YES LONG BASE)...
Back from an 8 week restoration! More pics coming!! Rebuilt from the ground up including motor and all electronics. Dampened entire chassis and sub-chassis, rebuilt and re-wired the SME 3012 Tonearm as well as the Headshell and mounted a Denon 103R on it (I also have a spare Headshell with an Ortofon 2M Black). Not to mention the cosmetic work that was done let me say the work that was done was truly exquisite and has yielded a sound that IMO second to none!.
Why you may ask why did I do all the work on this table ? Well it is an extremely rare table maybe as few as 2,000 to 2,500 examples left (Originals not replicas) so in the vintage TT world they are highly coveted. Not to mention the fact that IF one would try and duplicate this table today new you would expect to pay upwards of 12k!
The sound? Well let me say this I am a digital baby...I almost remember the day at 14 years old that I bought my first CD I think within 2 days I literally threw out all my albums (ouch)! Well fast forward (or shall I say skip 34 tracks ahead) and I find myself again collecting albums. Why would I do such a thing? Let me say this (not to start another thread here LP vs CD or Digital vs Analog) THERE IS NO BETTER SOUND THAN A PROPERLY SET UP ANALOG SYSTEM! There I said it!! I still enjoy certain digital offerings via my ERC-3 but on a whole there is no comparison between the 2 media! The depth and width of soundstage simply cannot be replicated in a digital environment (square waves vs natural round waves) What about impact and dynamics? Well unless you've heard an Ortofon 2M Black I would say there is not enough difference to human ears to make the slightest difference! All this being said as with anything you cant compare your old Technics TT with a Thorens done right anymore than can you compare the ERC-3 with an Emerson CD, they both play the media but it's how they delineate the reproduction is where the rubber meets the road so until you have heard a very good to excellent TT set up don't let your "memories" of vinyl taint your opinion!
Thanks,

Well the 125LB is near completion and I should have it the end of next week! A long process indeed but I am sure it will worth the wait...As for carts, after consulting the restorer whom has 25+ years experience with these types of tables and knowing the type(s)of music I listen to he suggested the Denon 103R MC I also just recently picked up an Ortofon 2M Black as well for the 145 and I will say it is stunning! I will add a couple of "before" pics today because a few folks here have requested them...

Here is the info on the platter mat. The gentleman that restored the table said it is a very nice mat. Not to mention I like the darker color (more rubber pieces) and it saved me about $30 off the one I was originally looking at!
