I know this unit is older but I want to see if there are any simple checks I could do before I call this thing a lost cause.
Fuses? Are there other tests to run despite not being able to keep powered up for more than 4 seconds?

Check and make sure there is nothing stuck in the zone 2 amp terminals if you aren't using them. If you are, disconnect the speakers running to it and see if that helps.
