Ok, I must admit that I keep eyeballing the Oppo UDP-203 even though I don't have a 4K/HDR10/DolbyVision flat panel as of yet. I've now talked myself out of ordering one several times since they have again become available this past Friday. Yes I've said in the past that I've never needed excuses to buy anything home theater, but this time I've wondered what exactly would I get out of this new UHD bluray player that my older Oppo BDP-93 isn't giving me, when I don't yet have a 4K flat panel? I will, though not sure when, get a 4K panel, but until then, what advantages would I be gaining that I may be overlooking?...if any? Anyone?

I will, though not sure when, get a 4K panel, but until then, what advantages would I be gaining that I may be overlooking?...if any? Anyone? Okay, I'm in a similar boat as I mentioned before, and feel even a little ridiculous in a way, now that I have the unopened box of the UDP-203 sitting here and staring at me in my living room with no immediate motivation to open it, because I have no panel to hook it up to, and the 103 is doing just fine where it is in my current system with my 1080p panasonic plasma. The only way I am justifying it to myself is to see it as a third step. in a gradual upgrade process, which is best done in gradual progressive steps, since doing it all at once at any given time might be too heavy on my wallet... Thus : Step 1. Get 4K capable streamers - Done Step 2. Atmos/DTS-X height speakers...--Done Step3. UDP-203 - Done Step 4. XMC-1 HDMI board / Atmos/DTS-X upgrade -- forthcoming--soon, hopefully Step 5. Oled 4K UHD panel -- forthcoming, don't know exactly when, but forthcoming Additional step (not necessarily first or last) - Acquire some great 4k blu ray movie titles... So three done, and three to go in my "baby steps" 4k - Atmos/DTS-X upgrade project... That is how I'm making sense on it, and the unopened UDP-203 fits right in

I still don't have a 4k source (other than streaming services through the TV) but greatly enjoy the picture that it provides. Non-4k material (BD, DVD, Cable TV) looks really good and the upscaler in my TV does a wonderful job at mimicking 4k from lower source material. 4k streaming video has the ability to look amazing! However, some 4k is just ho-hum. After Christmas I will likely invest in the Oppo 203 and buy something in 4k. But, I would recommend a panel first.

You really won't gain anything with the 203 over your current OPPO until you get a 4k display. I will say that as of now the 203 is the best 4k player on the market you can buy. You also won't need the HDfury intragal either for use with HDR on some displays and PJ's. I'm loving mine.
I'd grab one now before the price goes up..if they go up..they are flying off the shelves.

Well... everybody is going to have a different idea on how they want to approach the 4K upgrade, so no one particular way is the right way - other than how you want to do it. For me, I have started with the Oppo 203 - sort of - actually I have a 4K (non-HDR) TV used as a display for my PC. So, in my particular case, I intend to test out the front-end components (203 and MC-700) at my PC, before I get a 4K with-HDR TV for the theater. I'll be watching what 4K TVs pop up at CES and will be available this coming 1st half of the year, including how the prices are going on OLED, and probably buy at that point. I'm still not convinced on OLED's either ;-) Then move the 203 & 700 downstairs - though I am still interested in the EMP-1 (revised design) for the theater. I haven't had any way to play any kind of blu-rays at the PC since converting to Win10, and I'd rather go the normal external route of player to TV (well, through a Surround Processor). Now I've picked up several 4K-with-HDR movies and can play them direct from the 203 to the TV, also using the 203 as a minimalist pre-pro.

There are small advantages to the 203. Menus and screens have been redesigned for the better. If you are playing music from a NAS or attached USB drive you can view by album and artist, and create playlists. Load times of Blu-rays are faster. I don't really see any differences in the quality of Blu-ray playback. Those aren't big changes, but if you think you're going 4K it might be a good idea to get started with the Oppo. It will be in the catalog for awhile, and they are already issuing firmware upgrades. It's very solidly built, and looks good with your Emotiva gear. Not compelling reasons I know, but those are the advantages as I see them. Mel

bought the sony 850c 55 inch last year...this years model is the 850d for $200 dollars cheaper. if your not big into gaming i would go for the sony 4k because most of the material i watch is 1080p tv and bluray. it upconverts to near 4k material with 1080p. best purchase ive made especially after updates. theyre even going to upgrade android tv after this year which should make it more serviceable. streaming netflix is smooth.

4k upscaling is much better in the 203 thank the Samsung k8500
Also it will eventually properly strip HDR from the signal for those that don't have an hdr display (i.e. 4k projectors ) as of now it doesn't work properly. But it's cofirmed oppo is working on a firmware to fix it
Also as you all know this thing is a tank, with faster load times I. Am loving it

I consider video much like audio, in that the bit that you actually hear (see) is the most important, hence speakers (panel) are always the first to upgrade in an otherwise equal system. Personally I'll be doing the panel upgrade first, then working backwards through the system, which means the processor is next and the source (sources) after that.
Cheers Gary
