Im looking for a solution to implementing Atmos (object based) hight speakers without mounting them in the ceiling. SVS may have a reasonable answer at a reasonable price. www.svsound.com/products/prime-elevation They claim better results than reflective mount 🔊 speakers. Any suggestions or opinions on my solution? Have a better one? Please let me know and share your thoughts. Thanks.

What about on or hanging from the ceiling?

not a very big fan of metal dome tweeters From what few Atmos titles I have heard the overhead stuff is not all that grunty, high mid range and tweeter mostly, not a big deal. Due to the cathedral ceilings I was contemplating a pair of tear drops (like the B&W mids and tweeters) in MDF, spun up on the lathe and mounted on 25mm OD alloy pipework. But Edward from Adelaide Speakers has some new ceiling designs coming so I'll hang out and see what he has in mind Cheers Gary

:Pjust take any speaker you'd like to use for Atmos to Colorado, the higher you want to mount them, the longer you'll need to leave them there.

An iPhone taped to the ceiling will out perform bouncy speakers.

I should have made clear from the start that I am completely allergic to obfuscated mids and harsh treble.

My two cents, feel free to skip this if you don't like it: When surround sound came out people were up in arms about how could that ever work and sound good. You mount a speaker to either the left and right of the MLP and adjust the volume, you can locate the speaker easily and adjust it to your taste. OMG it so cool compared to just two channel! (Two channel people feel free to start yelling)
If you take that logic and mount two speakers at the front of the room high on the wall at or near the ceiling and run the front height channels to them you can adjust the sound till it meets your taste and you have Atmos/DTS x (5.1.2) 'KISS'. You can put in ceiling speakers above the front two Left and Right mains for the same effect if you don't want to mount something on the wall 'KISS'. Now put two at the back of the room and connect the rear height channels and adjust to taste and you have (5.1.4) 'KISS'. You could even mount box speakers to the ceiling and fire them down for the same effect, not visually appealing but probably effective. 'KISS'
The beauty of immersive sound is just like surround sound, it creates a different experience and envelopes the listener once dialed in to taste. It may not be for everyone and that is OK, I can tell you from personal experience with in ceiling speakers it sounds excellent and creates a sound that makes you feel like you are in the scene. The movie Unbroken at the beginning when they are in the plane on the bombing mission, the Atmos effect gives you the sense you are in the plane getting shot at from all directions, it raises the hair on the back of your neck.
If you can find speakers that are matched to your mains you probably have the best sound. If you can't match then find something in a box you can mount high such as the SVS or something in ceiling that meets your listening tastes. Atmos/DTSx is simple, the AVR or Preamp will take care of the processing and you can adjust the height effect to taste after you run room correction by increasing/decreasing the volume for those speakers. 'KISS'
In simple terms this is Surround sound expanded and that is it. I know that comment will get beat up for its simplistic nature but that is the reality.
KISS (keep it simple stupid). I am not calling anyone stupid, I am using a term to describe the fact we over complicate things in life when we don't have to and sometimes the simple way is easy and effective

I like this solution. In fact,I believe that I had pointed it out previously.I do not favor in ceiling speakers. If you rent you probably are not allowed to put holes in the ceiling. When you own that isn't an issue but you lock yourself into a permanent setup with fixed speakers unless you are willing to seriously remodel to move them. How many of you have never changed the layout of a room?I bet anyone with a wife or girlfriend knows this well. The ladies get tired of the same old thing far more than guys and if they can't move to get new they rearrange the furniture.
The reflective type speakers just strike me as a less effective solution.I simply can't see how floor speakers aimed upward to reflect off the ceiling and bounce the sound back down are going to outperform high mount speakers directing that sound directly downward.Reflective type speakers strike me as more of a convenience option where you can't or do not wish to have speakers up high.
With speakers like these SVS it would be relatively easy to change I think if you decided that they were not working out as you had hoped. As to the SVS speakers themselves,I don't own any but I have yet to see a negative review. They seem to be well built,be reasonably priced and perform well. There may be some better options out there but nothing springs to mind that would make me say try these instead.

That's a great idea! Do you like them? I like KEF and I'm sure they don't play deep, but are they thin sounding? No pun intended My room is in a finished basement with a sheetrocked ceiling. No way to run cables through it. These speakers would work great! I noticed they make a smaller version as well which may be great since my room is only 12x16 with ceilings just under 8'. I also noticed Klipsch has a similar speaker (G series). Wonder if those would work? Also, did you use the including wall mount or was there another way to mount them? I wouldn't be surprised to see KEF, and others, start designing speakers like these as ATMOS solutions.

Klipsch also has the RP-140SA which you can set on top of your Front Left/Right speakers and bounce the sound off the ceiling. Probably not optimal but a fairly simple setup which doesn't require lots of in ceiling wiring, etc. Casey

I got these since they have better bass and you could x them at 100hz or lower.

I'm curious if the new Atmos upgrade for the XMC-1 to 7.2.4 will allow us to use front height speakers?? According to Dolby website the .4 aspect only shows in ceiling or Atmos enabled speakers. The 9.2.4 was what they showed added the front height speakers. Can we just put the speakers wherever we want or does it have to follow specific placements??

I'm using Anthony Gallo A'diva spherical speakers for my ceiling and have been happy with them so far.
