I was playing hi Res FLAC files last night using VLC. They sound great. The light on my Big Ego only shows 44hz whereas the files are in fact 176hz...any ideas please?

You are not playing them using WASAPI bit perfect mode. So windows resamples everything to 44.1 khz. To pass bit perfect you'll need a player that can do it. Foobar can do it, but you have to also make sure to download the free WASAPI plugin and install it. Media Monkey is also free and has the WASAPI pluging already installed. You will have to tell both these players to play through wasapi mode. It's not automatic.
I believe wasapi mode is available also in VLC. It's called MM mode. But I have no clue how to make it work. There's been hints that this functionality doesn't work from the brief reading I did. Anyway, the little I read said MM device can be found in Tools - > preferences and then I got lost.
