My XPA-5 is on a floor rack between my left and right speakers. Since it is on display, I'm thinking of replacing the metal top cover with a clear one, then place blue LEDs somewhere inside to cast a nice glow on the five heat sinks. Would this be a good idea? I already have a supplier for the clear plexiglass. A local shop can laser-etch the Emotiva "E" on top for a nice effect. I also know the LEDs will need a current-limiting resistor. I just don't know where inside the amp they can safely get power. Any tips/ideas?

If you do choose to put a plexi top on I would make sure it has holes drilled. The amp needs ventilation and a solid top will possibly cause it to undertake higher than normal temperatures.

I think it would be cool too, but do keep in mind ventilation is needed for reliable performance down the road.

Looks like your room can be completely light free if desired. Very cool.

Bad move......even with drilled ventilation the plexiglass will be far more of an insulator where the metal draws off the heat. Live with the already good looks and leave well enough alone.

Forget about the plexiglass. Get real glass like in tube glass that is....

I think the plexiglass would look pretty cool. I would recommend cutting more ventilation than the standard metal to account for any "insulator" effects the material may have.
The only potential drawback I see is the plexiglass may be a bit more fragile/brittle than the metal, especially with more holes/ventilation drilled into it. If something ever falls onto or hits it, the plexiglass is going to shatter whereas the metal will "just" bend. In one case the internals are toast, in the other you have a chance.

May I suggest (for two reasons at least) that you give a call to technical support in Tennessee and run it by them. Especially when you are talking about using internal power for a custom lighting display.

Bill I doubt they'd give any answer other than "It will void your warranty" If your heart is set on adding some internal lighting, make it battery powered. Maybe use one of Emotiva's ET-3 trigger expansions so the lights turn on with the amp.

Bill "I doubt they'd give any answer other than "It will void your warranty" I disagree, Anyone who's spent time with the Emotiva Technical support team knows you can talk to them about ALMOST anything. From following the thread, I know this gentlemen put tremendous thought and effort into a room that satisfies specific requirements. Just sayin after all of that, would be a damm shame to screw up the amplifier only to enhance a visual effect. Bill

If the top gets warm at all I say NAY. Nay I say. Not in a hat, not with a cat...
Seriously the metal chassis is probably part of the heat dissipation system. As far as I know the heat dissipation of plexiglass is much less than aluminum. You would need much more ventillating area than the metal chassis has.
If the metal stays cool to the touch, this is probably not an issue.

Be sure the plexiglass is thick enough to withstand internal capacitor explosions.......
