I got the Emotiva Airmotiv 6s at the beginning of September.
I'm having a problem when my PC goes into hibernate mode, or restarts.
Sometimes, but not all the time, when either of these two things happen, I hear a sprinkler like static noise. It lasts a few seconds.
Is there a way to mute the audio after X minutes of inactivity? I think that would prevent that noise.
Or, is there some other way to put the speakers to sleep mode?

Sounds like you need to go over your PC'S power settings. Everything can be adjusted to coincide with your activity time at your work/play station.
Sound/mixer levels on the computer can alter quite a bit how much of that kind of noise comes up also.

Are you sure the noise is not coming from another PC hardware component like, for example, an optical drive unit, and have you updated the device driver for your audio playback device (onboard audio, internal soundcard or DAC unit)? If this hasn't already answered it for you, what's the make and model of your playback device? If it's onboard audio, could you please also specify the make and model of your PC motherboard? What's your OS? Anything else you can remember you did besides getting the Airmotiv speakers that may have caused the issue to start to occur? Additional info you might find helpful for us to try and pinpoint the root of the problem?

The sound card is on the motherboard. I can't remember anything else. Also, for what it's worth, my old speakers were a 2.1 unit. I remember those would make a "thud" from the subwoofer when powering down, for the first 1 - 2 years. At the time, that was on Windows ME. My audio driver is Realtek High Definition Audio 6.0.1.6378.

Bill My power settings are to turn off the display after 20 minutes, and to put the computer to asleep after 1 hour. Is there anything more specific I should look for? Where?

Thank you, I will try that tonight. I will then see if it solves the issue. But it doesn't always happen, I notice it a few times a week when hibernating (rather than 1 - 2x a day). What do you think could be in the codec update that could resolve this issue?

Thanks. I installed 6.0.1.7954. For what it's worth, I heard the sprinkler-like noise when my PC was being restarted to finish the un-installation of my old driver. I didn't hear the noise when it was being re-started to finish the installation of the new driver. But as I said, it's not something I hear every time when restarting or hibernating. I will continue to monitor this over the next few days and weeks.

It's been 2 months, and I still haven't heard the sprinker-like noise any longer.
It looks like updating the driver helped.
Thanks yves.

I think you should celebrate that by getting the Emotiva Big Ego. Realtek sound quality suuuuuuuux.

I want one though that can be connected both via USB or optical out. I want the optical out connection so that I can connect my portable CD player to it, when I choose to use that. I'd use USB for my PC. Or, I could use S/PDIF too, so maybe I could get a DAC with only optical out. Does Emotiva have a DAC that supports both a USB and optical out connection?

To be able to use optical S/PDIF (Toslink) for hooking up a CD player to a DAC the DAC needs to have optical in, not out. The Emotiva Pro Stealth DC-1 has both USB and optical in, but anyway... rip your CDs to FLAC and just forget that portable CD players ever existed (that's what I did 20 years ago).

So Emotiva doesn't have a portable DAC with an optical connection, right? I just got the portable CD player a little over a year ago, and I like using it. I like the sound from it. I only use it at home in my bed though, so only a few times a year. Oops, I meant the CD player had to have optical out. Here's an instruction manual for it, which says it has optical out on page 4. www.manualslib.com/manual/648670/Panasonic-Sl-Ct810.html?page=4#manual

For now, the only portable DACs from Emotiva are the Big Ego and the Little Ego, but neither one of those has optical in so no, not that I am aware of.
For portable playback I use my Astell & Kern AK240, which, BTW, also doesn't have optical in. Optical out is still being supported on many portable devices, moslty only as a legacy feature IMO, but I think the days of optical in on a portable device largely are numbered, mostly in favor of micro USB (and sometimes also inbuilt WiFi, which IMO is the way of the future in portable HiFi). The only portable device I ever owned with optical in I threw away years ago (Sony MZ-R30 MiniDisc portable recorder/player).
