..........There is one thing I miss when having fun with something like House on Haunted Hill, or other old fun movies like that, especially around Halloween (with any luck at all, I'll never grow up!) My old Sunfire Theater Grand Processor (which I still have,) had those effects like "Stadium", Cathedral, Jazz Club, etc. with 20 step levels, depending on the rest of your gear and the room size, etc. Cathedral was a blast when the ghosts and goblins from the 50's got cookin! The XMC "forces" you to get everything right, so those days are gone. For me it's a big thing the XMC-1 is missing (and something they won't change). I know I'm in a VERY SMALL minority, but I would much prefer the XMC-1 to have some of those "modes" you speak of. Every once in a while it's a must for a certain movie. Where it's a complete must for me is on many live music recordings on CD. Many (if not most) live albums put out by bands basically suck to me because they just aren't used to mastering something live. [Let me preface this by saying I much prefer a good audience bootleg to a soundboard any day. Soundboards are okay for getting more detail, but they certainly don't usually sound "live".] When I listen to live shows, I want it to sound like I was there, in the stadium, in the arena, in the theater, at the bar etc., in attendance at the show. Nothing is more disappointing to get a CD of some great show you attended only to have it sound as flat as a pancake and nothing like it sounded the day you saw that show. Sound modes like Stadium and Arena help with this. They aren't perfect, but for my money I'd rather have them than not. I will disagree until my dying day with anyone who says they are pointless.

I'm going to admit something that will likely get me booted from this community.
On occasion, when watching vintage cinema (1930 - 1950), I will actually use one of the synthetic audio modes on a Pioneer Elite AVR.

Funny seeing this topic as I just watched the first movie in 2 ch mode in a long time. Watched Needful Things which is mastered in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Kinda seemed like a contradiction to see them put together. I turned off the XPR-5 and just ran L and R. Scott LOL, Ive done the exact opposite a couple of times! I forgot to power up my main speakers, the rest of the system is so dang good that I never noticed or noticed later in the movie. I have watched the whole movie without them.

Although like I said in my post above, I do it with MUSIC!!!! Live music that is. So I'm gonna get more than booted. I'm not sure what everyone can do to me over the internet on a forum like this, but it's sure to be gruesome.

Great for some concerts and other recordings that are less than stellar and need something. I even used to use it with Pandora for some alternative rock stuff, etc. One day an engineer friend of mine (teacher of electrical engineering and no slouch) walked in while I had some tunes lit up with some help from a sound mode, (cathedral worked great in my system on just level 2 out of 20). Not knowing the effects were on, he remarked how great it sounded. Many recordings suck, yet the music contained is fantastic, so why not throw a life preserver out there. Bill

Don't get me started on those so called 2ch live concert albums - when the audience claps coming from the front left and right speakers - immediately put off by this and can't enjoy the rest of the album.
