Depends on the content for me. I usually default to Dolby PL II or the DTS Neo option (I probably botched the exact labels of these modes).

I got really frustrated/sick of trying to matrix 2 channel sound to something else. So much so that I have reduced my TV system to a 2ch setup.
Stay in 2ch for 2ch sources.

To the OP, Why not try different sound modes and see which one(s) you prefer?

err, that's the thing - I can't get a consistent results with my existing PrePro (Marantz AV7005), wonder if XMC-1 can do its magic for me?? I have to switch mode mid-movie when the intensity or actions scenes change, really hard to keep up. Thanks

The trouble is the varying matrix modes have their own rules, and they may work differently for each movie. As a result, it is difficult to give you a hard and fast rule. I think in general, the music modes work better (with music), where there are not discreet rear channel sounds in the mix.
I think the other advice given in this thread is worthwhile. Try the different modes on a particular movie and see if you like one above the other. Or chuck it all and listen to the original mix as it was intended by the film makers.
Remember, some two channel movies were designed to be decoded into multiple channels, many were not. That further complicates your choices.

Mainly because many 2ch dolby digital broadcasts have flags to activate the surround encoding ; from an old dolby pl2 pdf - But as mel says if the program doesn't have a dolby surround logo [in the end credits] it makes it more complicated .. Dts neo6 on the other hand is more generic without any encoding ; still it has a good algorithm so is useful Ide maybe try pl2x music mode as that has more flexibility with its panorama;center width and dimension adjustments

I run a UMC-200, but I find that the matrix I prefer differs on different source materials. So I try them out then settle in with one, unless stereo just sounds best.

When I use one (rarely) I prefer the DTS Neo.

Hi guys What sound mode(s) do u use on xmc-1 when dealing with older movies or tv series where only 2ch is available? Thanks. With the XMC-1, I find Both DTS Neo and Pro Logic II (for movies) provide a very convincing surround sound experience with the older 2 channel material. In some instances, better, than some actual surround sound discs. I usually start with Pro Logic II on the old stuff and then switch to DTS Neo to see if the dialog sounds cleaner, then stick with the better dialog. Once that's decided on, I just play with the surround and center levels manually. No big deal since the level settings will default to the preset when all is done. ..........There is one thing I miss when having fun with something like House on Haunted Hill, or other old fun movies like that, especially around Halloween (with any luck at all, I'll never grow up!) My old Sunfire Theater Grand Processor (which I still have,) had those effects like "Stadium", Cathedral, Jazz Club, etc. with 20 step levels, depending on the rest of your gear and the room size, etc. Cathedral was a blast when the ghosts and goblins from the 50's got cookin! The XMC "forces" you to get everything right, so those days are gone. Sometimes when I read around here, I feel like the overdose of technical jargon is pulling us away from the point of it all..... Funny seeing this topic as I just watched the first movie in 2 ch mode in a long time. Watched Needful Things which is mastered in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Kinda seemed like a contradiction to see them put together. I turned off the XPR-5 and just ran L and R. Scott

my denon goes to prologic automatically when a movie like this is on netflexs What Denon does is remember what setting you had it on the last time it received such a signal. It doesn't just automatically switch to Dolby PLII, DTS NEO, or stereo by it's own decision. This is a great feature because if the last time you watched a 2 channel movie and did the whole Dolby/DTS hunt thing, you don't have to do it all over again. And the second you switch to something else, like a native 5.1 signal, it switches back. Basically, it constantly reads and deciphers what signal it's getting and switches itself to fit what you like. Someone please tell me the XMC-1 does this. If it doesn't that's a big 'el sucko. A huge possible deal breaker 'el sucko.

For me it depends on what I'm watching. If it's some old classic that was only ever stereo, then that's what I watch it in. If it's some crappy DVD transfer, like say the movie Stripes, which could be in 5.1, then I use NEO.
A bigger question is, what do you all do with the XMC-1 when the movie is mono? What are the options? Is there a mono mode that sends everything to the center channel? It there a matrix mode that attempts to turn mono into stereo?
