As many of you I am anxiously waiting for the introduction of the new 4K model 203 by Oppo. It should be out in the next few weeks. I am thinking of upgrading my Sony BDP-6500 Blu-ray that upscales to 4K and plays SACD's and has a good picture and my old Sherbourn CD1/Emotiva ERC-2 that has great sound. I am more into two and multichannel audio than video. My main question is will the Oppo 203 be as good sounding as my CD1-ERC-2 CD player ? I know that the 203 is not out yet, but I am thinking that on the audio portion it should sound similar to the Oppo 103. Has anyone experience with a comparison of the sound of the 103 to the ERC-2. I know that the Oppo 105 and new 205 model will be better audio than the 203, but they are out of my limited budget. Any thoughts and opinion's would be appreciated . Matt

I can't comment on an ERC-2 but in a 103 versus ERC-3 it was no contest, the ERC-3 sounded far superior (my ears, my systems, my room etc). That's an overall "quality" judgement, the 105 comparison was more that I didn't like its sound.
The big thing I notice (and like) with Oppos is their video capability, which is even more relevant in a 4K environment, if that isn't important to you then there's nothing wrong with a BDP-6500.
Cheers Gary

My ERC-1 sounded better than my BDP-93 and my ERC-3 sounds significantly better. I can't say what the difference was between the BDP-93 and BDP-103 in terms of audio, but I don't remember a significant difference in sound quality between the ERC-1 and the ERC-2.

Hmmm. Great question. I don't know if I would fight that hard for a 203, vs. A great CD and moderate 4K player that is doing the job. Your mileage may vary of course. If they truly hold the price to $499.00, it will continue the fine quality of build I enjoyed in my 103. Just with 4K ability. It will be interesting how it all comes out when the tests, and comparisons begin. Time will tell.

I own an Oppo 103 and an Emotiva ERC-2. Ive done extensive listening and comparisons between the two and IMHO, my room my this and that,,,,blah,,,,,blah,,,,,, I much preferred the ERC-2. I prefer the Emotiva DAC sound so much that I have the Oppo running through a DC-1 because my ERC-2 is currently in another system. Just my

I agree withe the general sentiment here. My ERC-3 > My BD103 for redbook cd playback. It does not however mean that I shall refrain from buying the BD203, when it shows up. I also enjoy the BD103's (1080p) video playback performance enough to keep it, even if I eventually buy the BD203.

For CD playback, I tend to believe uni-taskers are the way to go.
Oppo is also keeping the price low so I predict they've put the investment into video playback.

I will buy the 203 for bluray and 4k bluray playback. I will more than likely move my 103 to the bedroom system. I've owned several bluray players and the Oppo's are heads and tails better in all ways than the standard fare.
The 103 sounds great for cd playback, though I do think my ERC-1 sounds a bit better. My .02.

I'm planning on getting the Oppo 203 to replace my 93, I expect them to sound pretty much the same because I'll continue to use the DAC in the XMC-1 (which I think sounds pretty good). So, to me the answer depends on what DAC you're using.

I have the ERC-3, newly acquired within the last few months, have owned the 103 since it was introduced and used it for what its intended for that being a universal player for all formats. Cutting to the chase as a few others have stated its not even close comparing the ERC-3 to the 103 for redbook cd playback, in fact I really didn't expect to hear such a difference when ordering the ERC-3. Personally I don't care for the sound of Sabre DAC's having owned a couple of them so will pass on the 105 and what ever eclipses it. It will be interesting to see if the 203 comes with the Cirrus Logic DAC that was included with the 103 or if they change it to the Sabre DAC's or some other chip for that matter. They have not posted any specs yet so for now its a mystery. Its interesting however that both the 103 and 105 are Class A rated Stereophile players, makes one wonder if the ERC-3 might not qualify for the A+ rating as a stand alone CDP, nah its too cheap that won't ever happen.
In the meantime I'm not convinced 4K will ever reach critical mass even though TV's and projectors are being sold with the technology. But thus far there isn't enough software to warrant it, and barely anything streamed or on the networks producing 4K. Once again the industry has put the cart before the horse. If thats not bad enough we have not put a disc, blu ray or otherwise in our 103 for months, given that most of the content we watch are streamed either via our Apple TV or OTA via our Channel Master tuner DVR, although I will readily admit spinning disc outperforms streaming easily.

We use the 103 all the time since we still rent from Netflix and do buy the blockbuster movies. We also stream quite a bit including 4k Netflix streaming of shows such as Daredevil, The Ranch, Luke Cage, etc. 4K will reach critical mass sooner than later. More and more TV's are 4K. Streaming is picking up steam and 4k bluray's are being released at a faster pace than when bluray came out. 4k is very cool imo. Can't wait for the 203 but almost tempted by the $189 price tag at Costco for the Samsung player. Over 50% off now.

I too would go for the standalone erc and the sabre dacs polarise opinions to some extent . As to comparing the 103 with the 203 Kauai the 203 is a new machine from the ground up with presumably a new analog stage matched to the new AKM 4498 DAC ; rather than the cirrus logic the 103 has .. www.trustedreviews.com/oppo-udp-203-reviewwww.akm.com/akm/en/product/datasheet1/?partno=AK4458VNThe other factor is whether you want to do an after market mod to it ; there are sure to be many proponents like the earlier models ; cant speak to the quality of course.. Yes I read somewhere that 4k uhd bd sales were higher than 2k bd sales at the same juncture ; and the oppo has very nice uhd computability with projectors that aren't the best at HDR but still can handle bt 2020

Thanks for all the input. It makes the decision easier to make. I have decided to keep both my Sony Blu-ray player and Sherbourn CD-1 for now. I will keep the CD-1 most likely for a long time. The recent price drops on the Samsung 4k disc player shows that the format is starting to take hold slowly. I will let the price drop on the second and third generation players of 4k and just buy a disc player only. I can keep my Sony BDP-6500 as my SACD player if I need to. Thanks again for all the input. Matt

Have not received yet. I'm ready to pull the trigger.
Would guess very few on the first go-around.

I just placed my preorder for the 203. I have been very satisfied with my 103, but I just got a new 4K tv with HDR and want to take advantage of it. I also ordered the MC-700 to replace my NAD AVR. Should be a good Christmas for my HT system.
