When it works, it's OK.
Worked fine last night. This morning I turn it on & get the message on jRemote: "Could not connect (NameResolutionFailure)"
Well jRiver's "support" is a Wiki populated with smart-asses. No assistance to be had there. The jRiver folks don't even provide a users manual!
So I've done the usual things:
Shut everything back off & restarted Deleted the server on jRemote & created a new one (reentered the access key after checking Media Network on jRiver to ensure it's right) Verifying internet access from the iPad and the jRiver server computer
And? Nothing works.
Now this afternoon, I may turn it all on again and everything will work perfectly (with no further changes).
After all this time and all the money I've spent on jRiver, I'm about ready to throw it away and start over. This just suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks!
jRiver is an acceptable (not great, but just acceptable) service when it works, but its moody nature is more than I'm willing to tolerate.
So for those of you who use other Mac players, what I'm looking for is a player:
That has built-in ripping functions That can be remote controlled from an IOS app That displays cover art That has a search function That can sort by artist or album That plays WAV files (this, alone, sinks iTunes) That is MORE RELIABLE than jRiver
Any suggestions?
Thanks - Boomzilla

Roon is super reliable but a deal breaker as it lacks ripping capabilities.

Boom...do you have a problem with TIDAL? I know it has been discussed but I forget the reason you do not use it. Did you ever try the 30day trial period. Discount for Veterns. Also there have been some bug fixes. The drop offs for ME have disappeared.

Why not just go too a dedicated streaming device?

...and sure enough - I turned it on again after lunch - now everything works perfectly! Irritating.

When my Jriver is non responsive I just hit the space bar on my Mac Mini and it works instantly.
On another note, I never turn my Mini off.

I'm wondering if you have a once in awhile IP Conflict on your network. Like some things get the same IP address. Or maybe the PC that has J River changes its IP Address and the Remote can't find it.
Have you gone down the path of assigning IP address? Either as a permanent lease at the router or hard loaded into your OS?
At home anything that is a Server for me is assigned a manual IP address. Also on my router I narrow the range of IP addresses that the DNS server will give out. For Example, the DNS Server can hand out addresses 192.168.10.20 to 192.168.10.49. Then if I assign a server address it could be something like 192.168.10.68.

I was going to say basically the same thing brubacca said but in more general terms. I suspect you have some type of intermittent network issue. A while back, I had something like that happen, and it was a failing router. I replaced the router and never had an issue again. That was before I had jRiver and it affected certain, but not all, things in my network.

Hi brubacca & klinemj - I think you're right. I've made numerous changes lately (new Airport Express in the living room, new printer in the computer room, new switch in the computer room, put wife's computer on the wifi instead of the ethernet, etc.) I'll troubleshoot as you suggest & see if I can vanquish the network gremlins. Thanks

The biggest smart ass is the guy that runs J River. I have spoken to him several times and expecting issues with his programs to be answered by forum members on line is completely ridiculous. I use their program just because I download files and am use to their program. It hooks up great with my Sony HAp Z1ES media player. I rip a cd--it automatically stores in J River and automatically transfers to the Sony unit. The Sony unit even turns on itself. I have transfered 2200 Cds no issues. Still the J River is way too complicated. If you are having issues I would recommend Foobar 2ooo. With this you add just the features you want

Yeah, the forums and he suck sometimes. Unfortunately, that's just how it is...they have made it clear they aren't changing how they do business. The software is great, but you almost have to be a tinkerer to deal with it.

jRiver Media center - any version. One pays for the software license key, downloads the product, and that's that. No manual, no instructions, no FAQ list - only a Wiki online that never quite seems to have the answer that you're looking for...
The software isn't cheap, and purchasing any OTHER software for that price, I'd at least expect a printable user's manual. jRiver? No...

I am sorry you are having the problems. The program works without issue on my PC, but then they are on version 22 or so for the PC program. I hope you get it worked out or find the right program.

Yeah, they really should take a pass through the Wiki. At the very least, update the dates on information that is still correct/relevant.

Boom, it's $50 per platform or $70 for a master license. Not terribly expensive. That does not excuse their lack of support or flakiness however. What's worse about this sort of software, regardless of price, is the time invested in importing your media, setting it up correctly and fiddling with the settings to get it just right. And then, all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, it does not work one day. Very vexing indeed! I do feel your pain. (biting my lower lip) You should write a scathing review of it. Use your metaphoric pen to give them a kick in the butt. be the first reviewer to say something bad about a product.
