Are these better than their old x ref subs? That's what I am waiting to hear since I have an X-ref 12 that is still faithfully working...

I don't need another sub.... BLASHPHEMER!!! NEVER, and I do mean NEVER say you don't "need" something in either audio or computing. Another sub is like - crucial to your personal existence. Mark Friends don't let friends talk about how many subs they own. LOL

They just weren't great performers and maybe had plate amp issues? People talk about them like they were "bad" - but I've never heard one before.

I wouldn't mind a 12" sub though. Not needed but it is a want... that's the the hobby I guess.

I have two subs, a B & W asw 600 (10 in) and the X ref-12, make my walls rattle. Not sure that's what I really want though.

The previous subwoofers were great sounding units. Unfortunately, Sonovox/Bash, the amplifier vendor is totally unreliable and doesn't support their products after they sell them. They also don't provide support documentation so that their customers (us) can service them properly. So, we discontinued the line until we could re-design a new amplifier to replace the Bash units.
Now we have brand-new amplifiers that are rock solid, and we service and support them ourselves. Also, we heard from many of our customers that they want a little extra slam on the bottom end, So the new models are ported or have passive radiators is to extend the low-frequency output.

I have to echo novisnick, excellent thread. My criteria for a good sub is simply the tightest bass possible (absolutely no woofers flopping around, port noise, etc). I couldn't care lass for bass < 35 hz, and absolutely never play loud. Mostly I play music, sound effects are not critical but would prefer something that hits a little lower than my bookshelfs. So... what do I need to purchase from Emotiva here? Recommendations?

Again, I just don't see how anyone could go wrong with a set of matched subs! Especially at these price points!! Why aren't they sold out yet? Only reason I can think of is A) waiting for the Airmotiv's B) already have too many subs!,,,,,,don't know how that could happen!! C) haven't started the system in the bathroom yet!! D) haven't dug all of the change out of the sofa yet

Dan - I have to say thank you for answering my question. I didn't expect such an honest and direct answer! I felt like I was being rather forward by asking what was wrong with an old product -- rather than talking about the latest and improved product. I have a feeling lots of more cool things are going to come with Rory on board! Looking forward to hearing (and I'm sure buying) more.

Hi Jim, Well, you live and learn...
This is one of the few times we didn't take complete control of the design and we lived to regret it.
The old subs were really nice except for the spotty reliability of the module... this would have been a minor annoyance if we received proper support from the manufacture of the amp plate. But they hung us out to dry. Lesson learned.
We have 100% control now.

Good to know, thanks Mr. Dan. Maybe that's why I couldn't find my x ref 10 on the trade in list...

I am not in the market for subs but I just wanted to say thanks to Dan for the information and openness here in the boards in the last days. Great insight and really helps to understand some delays or decision. So - thank you!

More info on the BasX 8" sub (S8)?
Release date? Physical dimensions? (looking for something compact, like 12x12x8 or smaller) Price?

More info on the BasX 8" sub (S8)? Release date? Physical dimensions? (looking for something compact, like 12x12x8 or smaller) Price? The price, I believe, was quoted as $199 in the newest podcast. If you check the link to the BasX sub manual under either the S10 or S12, you will get documentation on all three models. I don't remember hearing a release date, though.

More info on the BasX 8" sub (S8)? Release date? Physical dimensions? (looking for something compact, like 12x12x8 or smaller) Price? It's on the site now. Oddly, it looks to be tuned lower than the S10. Looking at the frequency response graph, anything under 45hz the S8 has more output, with the S10 providing more midbass. I would have expected the exact opposite.

The S8 is tuned a bit lower, but remember it can't move as much air as the 10, and it has less power to work with. I've got to tell you though, all of these new subs just kill their competition at their respective price points.
They sound great, look nice, are very well constructed, and they are incredible values. Can you imagine a tight little HT system with 4 of the S8's in it?? It would hit low, have very smooth in-room response, pressurize the room evenly, and kick butt on a single larger woofer. All for less than the cost of a typical 12" sub... nice.
