OK - So Oppo's bringing out their new "FLAGSHIP" 4K player sometime soon. The UDP-205 is supposed to be Oppo's best (and supposedly priced about $2.5K?). Which brings up a J-Lo-buttload-sized bunch of questions (which I'm hoping someone on this thread can answer). To wit: 1. Will the 4K content play on ANY 4K-capable TV, or are there a bunch of exceptions? 2. What DAC will the 205 use for surround mixes? What DAC for stereo? 3. Will the 205 have room-correction software, or will that have to be part of the external processor / AVR? 4. Presumably the 205 will pass HDMI content including soundtracks with Dolby Atmos encoding? 5. Will the 205 be completely zone free, so that owners won't have to hack the hardware to watch foreign discs? 6. Anything else I need to know that I don't?

Probably not region free. You will need a TV that is HDMI 2.0 capable and also HDCP 2.2 capable for 4k content - most of the time like blu ray 4k. If you don't have one of those then you will need the monoprice converter.

1. Yes, any 4K TV HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 capable, but if you want to see HDR 10 of Dolby Vision your TV must be able to display it. 2. Not announced as yet. 3. Doubt it. That's really in the domain of the processor it's attached to. I already have Dirac. Would not want to buy that or a similar system twice. 4. Yes 5. No. Oppo has never made such a player. However, 3rd parties make easy to install plug in devices that make the players region free. There are already solutions for the new UHD-203 6. Probably lots if you are like me.

It's nice to see that they replaced the semi-touch buttons with real buttons.

Mel In researching TVs to replace my failing previous set, I found that there are SDR sets that can accept a HDR signal (they're also marked as HDR compatible). However, they lack the dynamic range to properly produce a picture that is HDR/Dobly Vision accurate.

Word is that OPPO is using the ES9038Pro DAC for the 205 - Same DAC as in the OPPO Digital Sonica: oppodigital.com/sonica-dac/The ES9038PRO SABRE DAC: www.esstech.com/index.php?cID=360 and www.esstech.com/files/7414/51...ief_121715.pdfThe ES9038PRO SABRE DAC is the flagship of the ESS PRO series. It sets a new benchmark for audio excellence with the industry’s highest dynamic range (DNR), up to 140dB, in a 32-bit, 8-channel DAC. The ES9038PRO was designed for premium home theater equipment including Blu-ray players, preamplifiers, all-in-one A/V receivers, and more. For serious audiophiles it provides the most immersive listening experience — bringing music to life. The ES9038PRO SABRE DAC also features ESS’ patented 32-bit HyperStreamDAC technology with-122dB total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N). The HyperStream architecture is responsible for both the outstanding sound quality of the ES9038 and the extremely low THD+N. A typical competitive, 32-Bit 8-Channel DAC using a delta-sigma architecture features-107dB THD+N (0.0004%), which when subjected to listening tests does not equal the clarity and sound stage of the ES9038PRO. Differentiating Hardware Features Full-scale manual/auto-gain calibration reduces device-to-device gain error Programmable volume control ramp-rate with +18dB option DoP to DSD decoder minimizes external processing Eight preset filters for maximum design flexibility Programmable functions Customizable output configuration: Mono, stereo, 8-channel output in current-mode or voltage-mode based on performance criterion Customizable filter characteristics: User-programmable filter allowing custom roll-off response Programmable THD compensation to minimize THD caused by external components
