It will have the latest ESS ES9038Pro DACs Good, but will it really sound much different? as expected and would accept no less All the rage but totally useless to me. Is my memory faulty or is this new over the 105? At first since they were (by that time in the statement) discussing outputs I read this as a "single HDMI output" and was pissed. Glad I re-read it again.

Nice to see that oppo added trigger in/out. Getting rid of the semi-touch buttons on the front panel is a plus also

Nice to see that oppo added trigger in/out. Agree. This will help use it like a stand alone DAC, where you can have it turn on with the change of a pre-amp input selector. Nice.

I'm certainly not an electrical engineer, but the inside looks nice and tidy. As in it looks like things are nicely laid out and organized well. No?

Although I hadn't been considering a 205 (expect to move my 203 down to the tv/theater room, possibly with the Emo MC-700), I had another thought regarding it's cost vs. the sum of other costs it would replace at my PC.
So... I have a stereo set-up integrated into theater set-up at my PC, not perfect, but... 99% of the time I play tunes from the PC via USB to the Emo DC-1 and then to a pair of Emo Stealth-6's. When I want to go theater-mode, either for gaming on the other computer or to try out a movie, I then go either gamer PC or Oppo 203 to the Emo MC-700, which drives the DC-1 (analog input) for stereo fronts, subwoof directly, and a UPA-500 for the center/rears. Lotsa boxes ;-)
Putting sound quality aside, since that is somewhat to ones taste anyway, it seems that the Oppo 205 can substitute for the MC-700 (sort of), and the DC-1, not to mention the 203, all of which add up to considerably more than the $1299 of the 205. The big difference is that the MC-700 has far more capability, but assuming I don't use stuff like the EQ sections, the main issue for me would be inability to set cross-over frequencies per speaker. At least in the 203 you can only set a global crossover freq, which really doesn't sit well with disparate speakers, especially the rears.
So, the 205 has USB DAC, coax and toslink digital inputs and headphone out (like the DC-1), decodes beau coup a/v formats (like the MC-700), but has only a single HDMI-in. My early testing with this HDMI-in from the gaming computer (Nvidia GTX-970 GPU) was that it wasn't stable yet and would drop and reconnect (note, rock solid from the MC-700). OTOH, I only need the one HDMI-in here at the PC (so far ;-))
The 205 has dedicated stereo outs (RCA and XLR), separate from the 7.1 RCA outs, but I wonder how those are integrated. I would like to continue to run XLR to the stealth-6's (which could be done from the 205's dedicated outs), but in theater mode would the 205 be able to send front l/r outs to those dedicated stereo outs, while sending the rest to the regular other outs. If instead it always sent a mix-down signal to the stereo outs, then no go.
Of course we like separates for a good reason, but I see less issue here at the PC. More feature set issues.

I am on the fence here as I have the 203 and was considering picking up the Sonica DAC since it allows streaming of Tidal/SPotify. I am also looking to pick up the RMC-1 once it comes out so really I may just send the data to the RMC DACs and let them do their thing.....if the RMC will have a streaming option then the Sonica isn't needed......

Yes, Yes, Yes,,,,,,,Im sure its worth all the praise and such but where are the onboard apps?? Es,I want them native to the unit. I'd love to do away with boxes, some at least ! Play 4K, 3D, Tidal , Vudu etc. all from one platform. Emotiva won't be offering this, I guess Oppo won't either. I want less boxes not more.
Anybody with me?

I understand where you are coming from, but I'm ok with netflix, etc on a small Roku box or other streamer. Those are easy to replace in the future.

Color me underwhelmed. No real new features except for HDR & 4K. No MQA. Why bother to upgrade?

Oppo moved away from supplying apps in the UDP series. A video steamer can quickly become obsolete, and they're now 100% focused on disc plays, USB, and video/audio quality. Plus, the 203 I own is VERY fast.
I said to a guy on AVS to just buy a Roku, and he got really upset - I apologize if I upset you by suggesting a Roku for streaming (I have a Roku Ultra, and it's great).

I can see the convenience factor and having fewer boxes, but I like the idea of the streamer being separate and replaceable as it ages. Kind of like an amp and preamp.

Color me underwhelmed. No real new features except for HDR & 4K. No MQA. Why bother to upgrade? Well the way I see it, Oppo is also setting themselves up for "future quicky" upgrades. Like they did the first time with the 83SE, and then later with the Darby Editions. They can release these now, then come out with an "added feature" 205-AP (AP as is app) edition for more money later. Or what about a 4K Darby edition? Or things you have mentioned in this thread. I hate to say it, but the average Joe everyday folks out there who don't know better and just jump on upgrade trains will do it anyway just because it's 4K. Because you just know they upgraded their perfectly fine working regular HD TV because the picture "just sucked." Never mind they never had it professionally calibrated. If the unit loads and works faster, I'm all for losing the streaming apps. I'd rather have it separate for sure. Also, I believe having them inside the box prematurely out-dates the box. Buying a new inexpensive Roku every few years makes much more sense to me. EDIT:Note, for me the upgrade is replacing my stand alone Panny Blu-ray player and my Universal Denon, and get all they offer as separates in one unit. That is assuming the Oppo sounds better than the Denon, but untested as of now. I'd bet a paycheck it sounds better than the Panny. I will also be able to use the Oppo as a new DAC for my old Sony CD player, which I love ergonomically (super fast / direct access / big nice feel well located buttons etc). All this and I won't even have a 4K TV. Upgrading from a 105 to a 205 is all about the new video, that's it. If I were in that circumstance, and didn't have a 4K TV, I'd wait for sure. If I had a 4K TV, I'd probably wait some more, or at most get the 203. I've never been one to upgrade every generation anyway. I almost always skip a generation in-between. Better bang for the buck that way.

Wait, I thought that the UDP-203 does do HDR and 4K? I'm so confused ...
Has anyone written up a detailed list of differences between the UDP-203 and UDP-205? As far as I could see in a brief glance at the UDP-205 page, the main value proposition is if you want to run analog out. If you run digital out, there isn't any real difference, right?
