Wait, I thought that the UDP-203 does do HDR and 4K? I'm so confused ... Has anyone written up a detailed list of differences between the UDP-203 and UDP-205? As far as I could see in a brief glance at the UDP-205 page, the main value proposition is if you want to run analog out. If you run digital out, there isn't any real difference, right? Casey Those are the main differences, I am debating getting the Sonica DAC for the streaming capability but am not doing jack until I speak to the Emotiva team in regards to the RMC-1 streaming possiblities

Casey Without getting detailed, yes. That has always been the main difference between Oppo's usual 2 offerings. 83 & 83SE, 93 & 95, 103 & 105, and now 203 & 205. The 203 is for every body except audiophiles (and audiophiles who have an alternative DAC of their own, like say an XMC-1), and the 205 is aimed specifically at audiophiles, who want "better" DAC "SOUND" processing using analog outputs. The video sections have until now been identical, so without reading all the details, I'd guess it's much the same. EDIT: One feature originally added to the higher player was also the ability to have digital INputs, so it's internal DAC could be used for external sources. If the magazines can be believed, this was an original idea and either the first (or among the first) player(s) to ever add this option. I'm not sure if the 203's HDMI input does this, but it still lacks the ability via Toslink/RCA/USB that the 205 has. So for my purposes, if I really LOVE the sound of the 205, I can run my old Sony CD player into it, as well as 2 other digital sources, and get the exact same universal sound.

Okay, I guess Boomzilla must have been referring to the UDP-205 as an upgrade from previous Oppo's, and not the difference between the UDP-203 and UDP-205. Casey

Been looking forward to this player. Almost looks it could serve as a rudimentary pre-amplifier as well... all it really needs is a phono input. LOL!

@casey - I think people were confusing a 103/93/83 upgrade to the 203.

Hello Everyone - question,
In anticipation of the arrival of my UDP-205, does anyone have a recommendation on a set of decent, but not outrageously priced XLR cables for testing out the Sabre Pro DAC with my XMC-1? I am not that well-versed on XLR, but figured a lot of you can point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Al

I make my cables myself (bulk). My two favored cable brands: Mogami 2549 at $0.92/foot (same cable as in Mogami Gold) and DH-Labs BL-1 at $6/foot. Add to this two pairs of Neutrik XX-series gold-plated XLR connectors (male and female) for $15 and some solder. I use markertek.com to buy Mogami cables and XLR connectors, and e-Bay to get DH-Labs cables.

All of my gear is hooked up with Monoprice XLR cables and I have had really good results.

One of the big blocks for me on the 205 is that it doesn't offer any streaming options and if you are planning on using a higher end DAC(e.g. RMC-1 or XMC) then just get the 203 and feed it via HDMI to the Pre/Pro. The Sonica gives you the streaming capability but does lack the headphone amp/remote.....

One thing I guess I missed, no HDCD decoding? Did the 105 not have this?

It may not have HDCD, but it's definitely not a downgrade! Sure it would have been nice to have it, but it may be due to the chipset used? Speculation. I sold my 103 and bought the 203 and I can tell you that I don't miss HDCD and also don't miss the streaming options. Have an Apple TV, the Samsung TV has built in apps, not an issue for me.
