I was thinking of getting the kef q900 and was wondering if the speakers would sound bright or harsh with emo stuff. For example with the Yamaha example 1060 the sound was really bright. But with demon 1300 it wasn't. Or would the kef r500 be a better choice?

In my experience, Yamaha equipment I've heard has all been "bright" especially at loud volume.

I've used my Emotiva gear with KEF Q-series speakers before & heard no brightness.

Thanks. That answers my question. Boomzilla have you heard the R series for kef? Is it dramatically better than the q series? I can get the r series for less than $300 difference than the q900. But I'm not sure if it's worth it

Most people advice going with the R 500 vs the q900. The R series is a huge step up from the Q. I run R300's with Emotiva Big Ego + MiniX and find no brightness at all. The R series is not bright, Klipsch and Paradigm Monitors (ones I've tested) are brighter than the R's.

Thanks. Speaking to Kef I decided to get the LS50 instead. I will always have a subwoofer and the crossover set to 80hz so I won't really need the tower speakers. The mid and high is more important to me. I just have it a pass because I thought it was bright. But it was really just the Yamaha receiver.

Yamaha equipment aka receivers and amps) have always sounded on the "Bright side " to me. Especially when paired with Klipsch. I had a pair of Klipsch 10.5's paired with a Yamaha and the mid and highs were nasty sounding no matter how I adjusted it. I switched to a set of KLF20's and it got a little better but it still sounded bad. I replaced the Yamaha and all was golden..

But I found those speakers bright.

Both amps did a great job. Very satisfsound. With a set of small subs they rivals having towers in the room.

Yeah I like that kef have a large soundstage. Piano music also seems a touch more realistic to me.

so I impulsively bought 2 pairs of LS50, one pair for surrounds. going to break them in and see how they sound in my small room. hopefully the highs will get a little smoother. Wonder if the Basx 2 channel amp will be good enough, or the xpa=2 may be a better fit.
