Just got into the game with my 1st amp.
Currently my setup is:
Pioneer SC-82 --> Surround R & L XPA-5 --> L, C, R
Mains are JBL Studio 590s Center is two ELAC Unifi 5s, in series Surrounds are JBL Studio 530s
The 590's have really changed their profile, once I got them off of the Pioneer's built in amp. Actually had to plug the rear ports, as I was getting too much overlap with the subwoofer.
My question (or two) is: how much power output does the XPA-5, Gen 2 make available to the 6 ohm JBL 590s ?
The suggested amperage for the 590s is 250 watts and I have an opportunity to pick up a Gen 1, XPA-2 for cheap. (at this time) Do I really need another amp, of course not. But I'm wondering if I would see some advantage to hooking up the 590s to a Gen 1, XPA-2

That amp will be fine for those speakers. The 6ohm spec isn't listed but 8ohms is 200W and 4ohms is 300W so a 6ohm load is going to fall in between those rated wattages.

The XPA-5 is a great amp with plenty of power for your JBL 590s. The XPA-2 brings control, and more dynamic headroom than the XPA-5 will have. Just more of a good thing. I loved my XPA-2 because it drove my Planar speakers with ease. Allot of lesser amplifiers not so much.
The XPA-2 will easily do 500 watts per channel into 4 ohms. The XPA-5 if memory serves, about 350 watts into 4 ohms. Now is that a night and day difference? Maybe, maybe not. The thing that you will get is more output current at lower impedances with the XPA-2. It was one of the highest current swinging amplifiers in the Emotiva Audio line for some time. So wattage wise may not be a big deal, the current swing is.
XPA-2 driving front L and R mains, and the XPA-5, all else is definitely a great way to go. It has been and will always be. Your music and theater will be epic.

In general, the amount of power an amp will deliver into 6 Ohms is about half way between the 4 Ohm and 8 Ohm rating. Just got into the game with my 1st amp. Since you have an XPA-5 you should move your surrounds over to the XPA-5 as well heck that's why it's a 5 channel amp Chad

Thanks to all, for the quick and informative responses.
Looks like I'll be adding the XPA-2 to my setup

The JBL 590 is listed at a Very Respectable 92db sensitivity. Add less than 3db to in the form of more amp power? An exercise in raising your electric bill. With 400 watts per speaker available from the XPA-5, you could easily cruise at a lease-breaking 30 watts and have huge power reserves for peaks. You'll get evicted from the neighborhood if you do.
As big an improvement as the EMO was over the Pioneer, you won't see that kind of bump again. HT receivers are notoriously anemeic in the power supply / amplifier department.
You might actually benefit from connecting the REARS to the Emo amp, as well. Get the Pioneer out of the amplifier business altogether.

AS everyone has suggested, I'm going to hook up the the remaining speakers and a pair of rear surrounds to the XPA-5. No point in having unused potential just sitting there, staring at me.
