Can anyone make a suggestion?

I'm afraid iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad are the only alternatives if you insist on keep using iTunes for loading music to your device.
If you are willing to let go of iTunes, at least for syncing music to your device, most DAPs can play music in Apple formats such as ALAC, AIFF, AAC, etc.

It may take a while but you can leave it working overnight, a couple nights maybe. I use mp3tag for metadata and album art. It got about 90% of my albums, save a few esoteric ones which I had manually handle. But even then, mp3tag has a great Scripting capability to make life easier.

With Roon you just point Roon to your iTunes music folder and Roon takes care of the rest.

Had it for 13 months now with no issue Bill Well I like iTunes and have had no issues with it. I really don't want to go through the change over unless I have to... So.... Who knows.. It was also my primer for the I phone since I still had an old flip when I got it. In retrospect probably, I would have dumped my old cell phone for the I phone 6 se 64g. since it really is an I pod touch/phone all rolled into one. But the touch was a gift from my girls (wife daughter) and who knew 3 months later the flip phone would die. It's actually very convenient having the redundancy and a potent Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen for casual listening. I'm behind the curve with this stuff so perhaps, others here have the better solution. Bill

I keep a classic hardwired in each of my two vehicles for convenience. I might look for an old iPhone - good idea.

It's like 9000 songs.. 800 Cd's I know of no audio format the iTunes supports that JRMC can’t play. Make a duplicate folder for JRMC and copy the iTunes music folder contents to it. I am reluctant to allow both iTunes and JRMC to concurrently access the same files. You then just import the new folder into JRMC. This doesn’t copy any files anywhere as the JRMC database is just an index file. I use 2 iPod Nanos in each of our cars as the car radios directly support apple devices. Your best bet is to stay with an Apple device.

I just started an experiment today. Ive had an 8gb ipod for a year using it like you. I am exhausted dealing with small memory, trying to keep new music synced, and keeping iTunes in addition to JRiver. I just bought a 128gb SD card for my android tablet and loaded 120 gb of music. I'm set.

So one of my iPod classics finally died and I'm looking for a plug and play replacement that works with iTunes. Can anyone make a suggestion? How do you use you iPods? I have an old iPhone with no SIM installed that I use for portable music when I need to use my current iPhone to make phone calls (what a novel idea). Cheers Gary

Lets see if it lasts..

There is also an external SANDISK iXpand connector for iPhones that provides 32/64/128 GB storage to your iphone. You should be able to download your music to that drive, and then connect to any iPhone you may have. Music would always stay on the external storage. www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ixpand-32gb-usb-3-0-lightning-flash-drive/5061603.p?skuId=5061603&ref=%C2%A0P10T12R106&loc=BODY&CampaignID=830082You may be able to find cheaper elsewhere, just happened to see the ad today. My Classic is a permanent accessory to my AUDI music system. Also, SONY Walkman makes a unit that is small and will play most anything. www.sony.com/electronics/walkman/nwz-a17/specificationsIt is around $299 list, but I got mine cheaper (but do not remember price). Has 64 GB internal plus up to 128GB microSDXC card. It also has FM tuner, and Bluetooth. Battery last fairly long, use mine for long motorcycle trips, with J&H earbuds. Eventually, the classic will wear out, but I will keep mine as long as possible!!
