It was bought as a recreational vehicle and tow car for a 21 foot speedboat I was dragging around. I "over protected" it; always in the garage and ready for a day on the water that I did not want to miss. So, I've got a "good memory" and suddenly 15 years blew by. Boat is gone and I'm "stuck" with this...(what fun). The grille is courtesy EBAY, as unfortunately the chrome plating started to bubble and come away from the original.

2 BEST days for a boat owner? #1 Day of Purchase #2 Day of sale.
Boat: A hole in the water into which you pour money.
Those Big V-8 powered 'ski' boats might be the worst. Sail boats are surprisingly expensive since they Always Need Something. Paint? Parts? Fixing? You name it. A never-ending contest of man VS machine.

This is the typical answer that comes up from people who know nothing about the sport, or get into it not having a clue what they're doing. Been at it since 1969 and love it Bill

I think this thread is now completely derailed.

I think most everybody who saw this and wanted to chime in on a 27000$ cd player has done so. Here in California, depending on exactly where you are, you are looking at an additional 2100$ PLUS in sales tax alone. For the sales tax ding Alone,....... Well, just imagine what 2 grand could get you! How 'bout that pair of XPA-1s you've always wanted?

There is only ONE logic that attaches itself to stuff like this.
I MUST have the most expensive system on the face of the planet 🌎 to maintain bragging rights.
Each individual component MUST be totally unreachable from a financial standpoint, to any clear thinking enthusiast.
It's roughly a 1.9 percent market share For this trip into oblivion.

At 27,000, this makes the Audio Research CD8, originally $8000.00 a bargain, which I listened to and could have bought for $3500, but I just couldn't justify it or the Audio Research CD9 with DAC another $9000 player at the time of it's arrival. The most expensive CD Player that I own is a Yamaha CDS-2100, which retailed for $3000, but I paid, wait for it, wait for it, $100.00 because I traded in a ton of audio equipment that I needed to get rid of from over the years. I also have a Audio Research CD-2 and a Cambridge Audio CD350 left. I can agree with Keith regarding over engineering, but if there is a market for it and people will pay for it from a businesses point of view why not. They will only sell a limited amount of them and the first 10 to 20 that they sell will pay for some of the marketing and the price will like anything else drop.
The larger question is do these expensive CD players sound any better than the cheaper ones and I can answer this first hand by saying yes. The CD-2 (I have had for 3 years) sounds better than the Cambridge Audio CD-350, which I had for 6 years and the Yamaha does indeed sound better than the two mentioned and is better built, plus it's a SACD player, I have owned for two years. The Audio Research CD8-tubed/hybrid is probably the finest CD player that I have ever heard and upon hearing it, it sounds Analogue in nature, it drew me in end and before I knew it hours/days had past (I was on vacation). The first week of listening to it, I stopped playing vinyl for 4 days while I tested it and didn't miss it for 4 days. Too expensive for me but clearly head and shoulders above anything that I have ever heard and I'm glad that I experienced it. I even took physical notes on what I heard and why.
The CD 9, I heard in store, but never at my home, so no real comment about it. I also agree that there is a point of diminishing returns with any component and if you go on YouTube and Analogue Planet and listen to Michael Fremers's Calliburn Continuum vs the Technics GAE or new 1200, it was hard to tell the difference, but again, both sounded great and I know that You Tube is highly compressed. A $100,000 turntable vs a $4,000 and a lot of people were surprise at how good the Technics is, so much so that the FREMER had to give an explanation for the way he tested and why between the two tables. (AGAIN I know about You Tube and compression, but it does give you insite into both)

Throwing a tube in the CD analog stage is an old trick Started by California Audio Labs in the 80's. ( I think they were first). Bill

For $27K, I could pay many bands to play a private concert for my family

Wow this thread has allot of traction. Let's see, toasters, 4 X 4 trucks with Lockers, and world best speakers for $179,000.00. Buying a nice house. I am not making any points, but just amused what a $27,000.00 CD player is to some. For me, it is allot of other things way more important. Looks like many have it covered. By the way a real nice truck with lockers, and 4 X 4 is allot of fun. Just please buy my gas. Thank you. 😊🙃😊

Big waste of money. $27K for a CD player? What kind of sucker will buy it? The same suckers that buy Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The cd player might not sound better and you won't be able to potentially drive the exotic car on the streets any faster than you would drive a Toyota. I would not call them suckers. Driving a Porsche Carrera 4 S or Baby Lambo is quite an experience and you cannot get that with Toyota. No offense. It is not all about speed.
