So I received my XMC-1 today and got it hooked up. I haven't really had much time to play around with it but since I'm the second owner I did a factory reset just to get the settings started from scratch. I did set some inputs, triggers, speaker settings, but not distances and I haven't fooled around with Dirac at all - hopefully this weekend I'll get time. Anyway, my initial impressions are very positive as the sound is noticeably clearer and better defined than my old system when listening to 2-channel music which was a big reason I upgraded. However, one issue I'm coming across is that when watching movies/shows from Amazon Prime or Netflix via the FireTV the sound is playing back in Dolby PLIIx Music mode as the default. I set the XMC-1 to auto select the audio mode and it keeps selecting this mode even though it's showing that the signal coming in is 5.1 Dolby Digital, and with my Pioneer receiver it always selected and played Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus. I also noticed that while the XMC-1 is capable of these surround modes, they are not even coming up as options when cycling through the different surround modes. Is this is a common issue? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Dolby PLIIx "is" a multichannel surround mode. PLIIx "Music" simply emphasizes more of a front/center focused soundstage. Setting "Auto" as your preferred detection mode will allow the XMC-1 to choose the default mode, based upon your speaker configuration, as programmed by its designers.
Rather than selecting "Auto" as the present for your multichannel detection mode, try "Surround" instead. The Surround mode will process a 5.1 or 7.1 multichannel bitstream "as is" unless a cross matrix is required to match the exact number of surround channels in your specific setup.
What is your speaker configuration...?
FWIW.... the information you're seeking is likely covered on pages 15 & 16 of the XMC-1 Owners Manual.

I'll try changing to surround to see if that helps. I did look through the manual and will go back through the main zone menu. I guess I'm just used to the pioneer where if olby digital signal came in the receiver set itself to Dolby digital.

Thanks again for the help. Now the XMC1 reads "Surround" when watching something in DDigital. How would I know its Dolby Digital vs. DTS, etc... Or is this just the way it works? Does anyone else's display Dolby Digital, or Dolby Digital Plus, or DTS, etc? Maybe I'm just used to the Pioneer which would display whatever surround mode was selected. When I went into the menu to select the default surround mode Surround was available but there wasnt anything for Dolby Digital. Although the instructions say it can do Dolby Digital, plus, hd, DTS, etc..

When I went into the menu to select the default surround mode Surround was available but there wasnt anything for Dolby Digital. Although the instructions say it can do Dolby Digital, plus, hd, DTS, etc.. The XMC-1's display will show you three (horizontal) lines of information. The first (top) line displays the selected input, the DSP mode and the volume level. The second (middle) line displays the audio source assigned to the input, the signal being "received" from the source and the bit depth/sampling frequently of that stream. Here's where you find the information you're looking for. Your input stream will say what is coming in (DD 5.1, Multichannel PCM, DTS Master Audio, DD TrueHD, etc....) and your DSP mode will display "Surround". The "Surround" DSP mode is discrete and remains faithful to the original mix " unless" the original channel configuration is different from from your speaker configuration. In other words, if the source is a 5.1 mix and you have a 7.1 configuration, the XMC-1 will automatically send a "copy" of the surround channels to the back speakers. The reverse is true for 7.1 > 5.1 where the back channels are "mixed" with the sides. DD PLIIx achieves the same thing, but by using a different method. No worries either way, this is how the XMC-1 works (and it works quite well). Hope this helps...
