A lot of us are very savvy and can even solder but manufacturer based upgrades are very common and offer some advantages.
When I had to send in gear for warranty work which took over a month, I grabbed a junky AVR on Craigslist for $75 which kept things sonically civilized at home.

Anyone else find this to be unacceptable? Unacceptable? No. Less than ideal? Yes. Talk about first world problems...

Ok so you can't live a normal life if you don't have your processor for a week? Do you even have a real job? Miss the point much [rolleyes]

A question.. Are there any other companies that allow you to upgrade your gear at home? Meaning a AV Pre-Amp hardware? I have a B&K Ref 10 AV Pre-Amp that they had upgrades for. If you did the upgrades the unit had to be sent back to the factory. Rhetorical question but a good one as indeed none of them do . How much is it worth not to have to sell it and get the next hdmi version as with other brands ? The resale of anything that hasn't got object decoding is abysmal down under the US I would only be conjecturing though.. Isnt this the reason we have spare umc 200;s or umc1;s as backup I like the reassurance when the car gets a service ; a % of that must exist for such a complicated device one would think to a greater or lesser degree ?

Was it an Emotiva that you had to send in for warranty work?

Sincerely a week or so to wait for having a supported, tested and working unit is a very good deal. The things get VERY annoying for overseas owners. The return cost would be very high and the lead time nothing comparable to a week which makes the upgrade out of reach. With Emotiva agreement, they send me a brand new analog board (which is the bottom one) I had to replace myself on a brand new unit that was not working correctly. Everything went very well (I have a professional ESD protection). I hope that in such case, Emotiva will make an exception.

"Anyone else find this to be unacceptable?" Not I.......... Emotiva is responsible to protect both sides of the equation. That means the unit goes back for upgrades and Testing. I recall Dan L. In one of his interviews, describing the XMC as a toy.....and a very useful one at that. I think it's a good idea to remember that, get over it, and just deal without the thing for a few weeks. My rabbit ears are set and ready, and when the picture is still fuzzy, I usually bang the TV 📺 with my right hand. Bill

I'm only upset that the multi HDMI 2.0b/Atmos upgrade isn't out yet. When is that coming out?

My perspective is that it is very, very cool that a beast like the XMC CAN be upgraded.

I can't be the only one here that finds this to be truly annoying. My XMC-1 is the only processor I have to run everything and to send it in for an upgrade puts my whole theater and entertainment center out of commission for at least a week. I tried speaking to Emotiva and explaining to them that I have been a computer technician for the past 10 years and I know I could easily install upgrades but they wont seem to budge on the issue. Anyone else find this to be unacceptable? not annoyed in the least. consider that most equipment is non-upgradeable and that will put all in perspective. losing your unit for a short time in order to keep it current is a small inconvenience compared to having to purchase a brand new one outright. tchaik..............

A question.. Are there any other companies that allow you to upgrade your gear at home? Meaning a AV Pre-Amp hardware? I have a B&K Ref 10 AV Pre-Amp that they had upgrades for. If you did the upgrades the unit had to be sent back to the factory. I know Emotiva has allowed customers to attempt some minor parts replacement, in particular on units out of warranty. They will walk you through it. The big amps are especially a PIA shipping back and forth. But things happen. When I had a single channel intermittent output on my XPA-5 (in warranty at the time) I called and they suggested a couple of things to try. In the end, I partially disassembled the unit enough to find and repair a cold solder joint on one speaker output connector. I was very lucky it was not more involved that it would need further investigation or disassembly to effect a repair. Right now my 7 year old XPA-5 is just holding down a corner of the room. I purchased an A500 to replace it as my listening area is modest enough in size that a smaller amp suffices. Not sure yet what to do with the big boy, but have plenty of time to toy with it. I suspect a power protection issue, but that's a discussion for another day. In most cases, I am for letting the company make it right. Besides, while I have some knowledge and skills, I don't have any comparable test facilities to run procedures to make sure everything is running to spec. And I would not accept anything less.
