Using my Onkyo 818 to drive the 4 surround speakers and as a preamp for the new XPA-3 Gen 3 for L/C/R.
Any tips to get it working optimally?

Well the obvious, let the XPA-3 drive your front stage, center, and left, and right. Run your audio calibration from your 818 again, and enjoy. Congrats on your new XPA-3 Gen 3. Easiest way to realize where, and what the excitement in wide dynamic range, and excitement your movies, and music have. Enjoy.

For my AVR to XPAs, I used the Monoprice RCA/XLR cables; they're a better quality cable all around, vs regular RCA cables.

Depending on run length to amp, budget, and audio goals / sensitivity to changes, you might be better served going Slightly upscale on the new cables.
If you're handy at all with a soldering iron, it is even feasible to DIY some cables, buying bulk wire from the likes of BlueJeans, who uses Belden almost exclusively. Madisound or Parts Express may have good starter wire as well as the rest of the parts needed.
Entry level Audio Quest makes sense, too.
Going to some of the exotic 'boutique' stuff is too ambitious at this time and not necessary for a typical HT setup.

No balanced available on the Onkyo 818, so you are Stuck with Single Ended.
And yes, whoever said that the cables that come with an amp or whatever ARE generally of poor quality or outright junk is right. I've got some real oldies which I keep around as a reminder. And could probably change into a system to hear how bad they could be.
In my and most other persons experience, Single Ended choice makes much More of a difference than balanced, which don't seem to vary that much. I use Mogami from Guitar Center for DAC to PRE hookup.
There is enough 'space' between MonoPrice, at the cheap end, and Really exotic and $$$$ cables that for me at least, the sweet spot IS the moderately priced stuff from the likes of BlueJeans and a few others.
