I am currently using a Sonos connect as my source along with an XPA 2 gen3. I would like to get a preamp in order to have more source switching and maybe run a 2.1 configuration. However, I was wondering if the PT -100 is the right component. Would the Sonos connect running the digital coax out to the PT 100 make use of the DAC in the PT100? I am new to this DAC thing.... thanks

Yes exactly. Anytime you use the digital outputs of the source device into the DAC of another, you are bypassing the internal DAC of the source device (Sonos). If you do this, I would recommend changing the volume setting in the Sonos Connect to 'fixed' (100%), so you can you the volume control on the PT-100 and not the Sonos. If you don't then you'll have to adjust the volume on both devices.

Do you think the DAC in the PT100 would be an improvement over the one in the Sonos?

Do you think the DAC in the PT100 would be an improvement over the one in the Sonos? I think that you would see a tremendous improvement in using the DAC in the PT100. Many use the Sonos with an external DAC and find it to be a benefit to upgrade.

Do you think the DAC in the PT100 would be an improvement over the one in the Sonos? While I have not heard the PT-100 DAC, I think you would. I have Sonos, and I find it sounds better through every DAC I have put it through...the DC-1, the XMC's DAC, and my Geek. And many have said the PT-100 DAC holds its own. Yet, I recall one person here thinking the Sonos held its own with some reputable DAC's. Mark

I agree with Klinemj, I have run my Sonos Connect into an Arcam DAC and into the DAC of a Peachtree Nova and they were both improvements over the internal DAC of the Sonos. I just got the PT-100 so I have not tested it's DAC yet with the Sonos, but I wouldn't doubt for a second that it's superior to that of the Sonos. The Sonos's strength IMO is in its flawless software implementation, NOT it's hardware.

Yep I would 2nd the DC-1 with the Sonos for the win. Convenience with the sound you really want. Everybody is happy.

I am looking at the DC-1 It might be interesting too. Are the DAC's the same in both the DC1 and the PT100?

I am looking at t.he DC-1 It might be interesting too. Are the DAC's the same in both the DC1 and the PT100? Not sure, but the DC-1 is a dual DAC setup and PT100 is one I beleive. DC-1 gives you balanced output to your amp, if you care about such a thing. The PT100 has a trigger out and phono input, so adding a Turntable wouod be a breeze.

If you do not mind not having a trigger adding the SP-1 to the DC-1 makes for a powerful DAC and Phono stage in a very small package. The performance increase of the DAC in the DC-1 makes a difference. No doubt the PT100 sounds good as reported here but the DC-1 is still a better DAC and that is good thing to shoot for. The phono in the SP-1 is also good. The PT100 is a great value.

I've heard the PT-100 and the DC-1 back to back in my system in a subjective manner. The PT-100 is close, closer than one thinks, but it's not the same in quality as the DC-1. However it is remarkable that it got close. The PT-100 is certainly better than the XDA-2 imo and is voiced similar to the DC-1's quality.
If your experience has been not hearing a difference in electronics especially DACs, I can almost guarantee that you won't hear a difference between these two units in any way.
However if you do hear differences, then there is a chance that you'll hear a difference here. I prefer the DC-1 despite the price difference. It's the best DAC Emotiva has made.
