mod/admin - pls move me if this is not the correct thread for my post.
I am researching networked media streaming to my XMC-1 via a small appliance-type solution and JRiver, Kodi or something similar. I have a library of SACD's that I have ripped and stored either as ISO or DSF. I know I could convert them to FLAC in advance or PCM on the fly, and my problem would be solved. But I want to exhaust all other solutions that don't involve external DACs. Duh, my XMC-1 has that covered.
JRiver boasts the handling of DSD natively, but doesn't bitstream it over HDMI (like a shiny disc in a player). Is there another way to get native DSD into the XMC-1? DoP, DLNA ... anything?

The XMC doesn't do DoP so that won't work. I have DSF's on a hard drive connected to my Oppo-203 (before that the 103) which can send those files over HDMI to the XMC either as DSD or PCM depending on a setting in the Oppo. It works great but does require the hardware.

Thanks I am aware of that solution, but the Oppo's user interface/library cataloging is inadequate for a large library. I am pursuing this on the JRiver forum where there is a lot of buzz on the subject. (I thought there'd be more buzz here on the subject.) However, it involves using DLNA to push DSD to an Oppo (as a renderer) with the Oppo outputting over HDMI. Still, this is not ideal and there seems to be a lot of issues getting everything to work reliably.
Golly gee, it sure would be nice if the XMC-1 supported DLNA, including as acting as a renderer!

The Oppo UHD-203 has an unadvertised Squeeze Client on it which I presume you could use to serve music files to the XMC-1 via HDMI. You could either use the Squeeze Server with that Squeeze Client or you could use Roon which knows how to talk to Squeeze Clients. For the Squeeze Server option, I like the iPeng iOS controller (I presume they also have one for Android). For the Roon Server, they have iOS and Android clients, though I haven't gone to Roon yet and loves it. Both of these work fine with Very Large Collections. Our collections are 90K+ songs, mostly CD RIP'ed FLAC with a smattering of higher-resolution FLAC and some DSD, etc.

Jeff I've used the 203 as a renderer with jRiver and it does indeed work. I just find it easier to use the hard drive connected to the Oppo. However, cataloging is much better with the 203 than it was with the 103. And Oppo just released a media control app that might also make things easier. I've installed it and verified it works but haven't spent much time with it.

I suppose it all comes down to how many hoops I want to jump through to get native DSD from my media server to my XMC-1 ... and that comes down to whether I can hear any difference. I am pretty much at "I can't hear a difference ... "
