Hopefully an easy question.....
looking for a simple system for a room where I will never have rear surrounds. Can the MC-700 be configured for 3.1 channels?

I don't personally have an MC-700, but I'd bet in the speaker/bass management sections of the GUI that it has the ability to select ON/OFF for back/side surrounds, center and subwoofer. I'm sure an actually MC-700 owner will be by soon to verify my suspicions.

looking for a simple system for a room where I will never have rear surrounds. Can the MC-700 be configured for 3.1 channels? Just don't connect the rear speakers? What difference you were hoping to have by having a 3.1 specific setting? Or do you mean you would like the processor to mix the rear channels to the 3 front ones (downmix)? I don't have mine yet, and the manual doesn't give any specifics on it. I think it's a common feature of av-receivers, so it's likely that MC-700 also has it. If no one else have verified this, I can do it for you hopefully next week

Under speaker setup...you can set to none for any speaker you desire.

I would assume the same as the UMC-200. turn of the speaker locations that you don't have in the SetUp - Speakers menu. The processor then knows that you don't have those speakers.
Cheers Gary

It works fine with 3.1. (I play concert videos in 3.1 mostly.) I haven't noticed losing any sound. I wish it were simpler to switch from 5.1 to 3.1 than having to turn the speakers settings and off, but it's not a real problem.
