So there is a Comcast app available for Roku which I have downloaded. It enables you to stream your Comcast service to any display(s) that has a Roku Stick or interface. This allows you to eliminate all the Comcast hardware. The downside is the Roku remote isn't very good and you loose a lot of the X1 features. But it can save you money on all the hardware rental charges.
So far it seems to work pretty well. I've got two displays using it.
Thought I'd mention it.

Good! Have you tried the Roku remote app, or one of the other 3rd party apps to control the Roku from a smartphone?

That's good news. I hope it comes to Fios soon. The FCC was supposed to mandate unlocked cable encryption in your house, so it could stream to any device within your network. However, that got canned recently. Until then, I'm stuck with low bit rate streams to Android boxes or paying 10 bucks a month for a box. It annoys me that we still have to deal with this all these years later. If it wasn't for on demand services, I would have gone for a HTPC tuner card and a couple cheap terminals.

Do people actually rent movies anymore? About 60% of Comcast's on demand catalog is free.

Do people actually rent movies anymore? About 60% of Comcast's on demand catalog is free. It's free but full of commercials. No less annoying than watching it on a cable channel.
