I recently started finishing my listening room set up. So far I have the following. Brand new: * Klipsch La Scala's II in Cherry color. * Yamaha A-S2100 * Yamaha CD-S2100 * Oppo Sonica Dac * More component to be added. I am loving the sound so much, and I am not using a subwoofer, as I don't feel it's needed. The sound is so clear, pure and enjoyable to my ears. Playing CD's or streaming Spotify through the Sonica DAC. I will be adding a TT, and few more components later. For now I am enjoying so much the music. The room is small 14 # 14# 9, I can't raise the volume too high and the low frequency level is adequate to my ears, as the system sits. Attachment Deleted

La Scalas DO work in small rooms (surprisingly), and no, you probably DON'T need a sub. Enjoy!
You might eventually want to try a tube amp... But you might not, either. If you fall for it, you won't be going back.

I have all my audio gear in place for my two channel setup in the back bedroom. I may add the Little Ego I just bought the other day - haven't decided on that yet. I have everything else connected up and playing very nicely. I had a pair of Emotiva ERM-1s for speakers but felt I'd like to have something that didn't require a sub. I needed another pair of speakers - like I needed a new hole in my head! A couple of months ago I fell into what I think was a great deal. I wandered into a local second hand store and stumbled upon a pair of Acoustic Research AR-2ax speakers in fairly decent shape. The price tag said $175 - just as I was reading that tag the woman running the place said she'd sell them today for half off. It took me all of 10 minutes to run down to the money store (ATM) and get the required cash. $87.50 plus tax and I'm the proud owner of a very old pair of classics. After dismantling them I came to realize these had never been opened - never been messed with! The grilles are almost perfect. Usually the grilles will yellow with age. Someone had taken good care of these. A rare pair IMO when you realize these were made in 68-69. They had the more desirable one and three eighths inch red/orange dome tweeter - and the cloth surrounds that do not rot like foam. I cleaned up all four rheostats with vinegar and salt - replaced the old oil/foil caps with new metalized poly caps. Cleaned up the speaker terminals - re-stuffed them with 30 ounces of new fiberglass insulation in each cab - just like original specs - connected them up to the ST-120 - adding the Emo PT-100 pre and WOW - I'm loving my two channel setup. It sounds very good - and I no longer need a sub. As good as the low bass is from the song towers the ARs are just as good IMO. Nice low extension with very detailed bass. With a 10" woofer you would expect them to play low. Ya gotta love a true acoustic suspension speaker. I know I do. While I don't claim that it is easy to integrate a sub into a two channel setup IMO it's best to have full range speakers. Between the two rheostats on the speakers and the tone controls on the PT-100 it is easy to tune in the sound I want. I've found that the tweeters were the only thing that needed to be tamed - the rheostats do just that - half way down and they are quite mellow now. Trying to get those ERM-1s just right with a sub wasn't impossible - just difficult. I like full range speakers much better. And even better than that is having a pair of speakers that are older than many of you. If you run into an old pair don't discard the idea of maybe adopting them. There are a lot of old speakers that will give you great sound in return for a little TLC. I have just under $150 into these. Except for a few deep scratches they look great. I need to add the AR badges at some point to make them look as good as they did when they were new. With a little oil based furniture polish the walnut veneer is once again looking good. Yes! Two channel rules!!!

Holy Ephrata Knucklehead!
Wow, what a treasure you just bought! The AR-2ax was a very fine and accurate speaker, highly regarded in its day. You found one heck of a steal and they look beautiful in the photos. Nice find at an amazingly low price!
