So guys, with the release of the A5125, aside of cost, power/channel and the slot cards system, what are the true differences between the two, electronics-wise?

The amplifier circuitry itself in the Gen3 is somewhat more sophisticated - and so sounds slightly better. The Gen3 amps use a Class H power topology, so they run a little cooler, and are slightly more efficient at moderate power levels. The Gen3 amps use a regulated switch mode power supply, which is lighter (because it's a SMPS), and which contributes to better sound quality (because it's regulated). The Gen3 amps have both balanced and unbalanced inputs (the A-5175 has only unbalanced inputs). As you've noted; the Gen3 amps are more powerful and are modular. So guys, with the release of the A5125, aside of cost, power/channel and the slot cards system, what are the true differences between the two, electronics-wise?

winchy , did you decide on one of these amps? If so, which one? I'm thinking about the A5125 because the Gen3 is a bit large for my liking, however if it sounds 2x better then it would be worth consider for me. Also thinking about the new ATI/hypex amps, but that are around $2600 for 5ch, and the Outlaw Model 5000 amp, but the SNR is not as good as Emo ot ATI. Given the prices of these things the A5125 on the top of my list.

Cost is an issue but the depth of the unit is what I am worried about. It would be a tight fit with the connections. Gen3 - 17” wide x 8” high x 19” deep (unboxed; including feet). vs A-5175 - 17” wide x 6” high x 16.5” deep (including feet and connectors) I am looking forward to reading some reviews on the A-5175. I will post them if I find any. Dan

The 8" height of Gen3 is not to be taken lightly, at least for me. My space is only 8.5" high, not to mention it would stick out the back by 1".

I have a Standout Designs entertainment unit that is about 20 inches deep with a closed back. It has a thermal sensor and 2 large fans for ventilation. I am worried about having enough room in the back to attach the RCAs and banana plugs. I am assuming that I can find some 90 degree RCAs and banana plugs. If not I believe I can at least connect the speaker wires the old fashion way. I think? I have a call into Emotive to find out this and to make sure the the 19" deep is including the connectors in the back. I don't have massive speakers to drive but I only want to buy an AMP once, My speakers are: L&R - Bowers and Wilkins 685, Center - Bowers and Wilkins HTM62. I am very tired of replacing $2,000-$3,000 receivers every time they enhance HDMI. So my plan is to get a Denon AVR-X4300H and a Emotive AMP and upgrade the AVR when necessary for $700 - $1,000. Also, my current Denon 4520 just doesn't have the oomph that my old Denon 4800 did. Not surprisingly it is also 10 pounds lighter. Glad to hear you are picking up an A-5175, can't wait to read your impressions. Dan

Once you add speaker and RCA/XLR cables it will more than likely exceed 20". My cabinet measures 18" deep, the amp I had measured 18.5" and cables added another 4-4.5" to that for a total of 22.5-23". I had to cut the back panel of the cabinet to allow it to fit. Not too much of a big deal, but also means it cant be up close to the wall. Different cables may require less room.

keep in mind that you can never have too much power. so, if your budget allows i would go with the xpa gen 3 amps. then you will never have to wonder if you didn't get the best right off the bat. that way the only thing you upgrade for a while is your avr or pre-pro.
just saying.....................

I agree it's good to have more power than needed rather than too little. However....I had a 5x400w amp (class D) in but had struggles with it buzzing so back it went. The fronts performed no better or worse than the rated 110wx2 amp (class a/ab) that was there before that. The class d amp was a tad bright and so I preferred the much lower powered class a/ab amp.

Is it true that the A-5175 has not yet been released into the wild?

Quick question for you AMP gods. Here is my current gear: Sony XBR65A1E / Denon AVR-4520CI / Bowers & Wilkins 685, HTM62, M1 / Klipsch KSW-15 Powered Sub I am buying a Denon AVR-X3400H as a pre-amp and looking at getting a BasX A5125 for all 5 channels that I run. The question is coming from the 150 watt Denon AVR-4520CI do you think I will be satisfied with X3400H/A5125 combo? I am hoping that the A5125 will have more dynamic head room. Thanks, Dan

8/7 is tomorrow. Looking forward to reviews, but will likely buy tomorrow or Tuesday before anyone has had a listen.

The Denon 4520 is no slouch when it comes to power output. It has been bench tested at over 100wpc with seven channels driven. Many flagship model AVRs struggle to produce half that much into seven channels. I doubt you'll find your speakers are under-fed with the Denon - especially in 2 channel where there is almost 200wpc on tap. The A-5125 won't make much of a difference power wise. I had a 4520 for a while. Nice sounding AVR. I found little difference between using the Denon amp vs the 3 channel Acurus amp I normally use.

I'm personally a little leery of HT receiver amps. I looked at the bench part of the Sound and Vision road test. Difference between 4 and 8 ohm power is <0.5db, which ain't much. Benchmark 'high' value is 3db which is 2x thte power.
No other 4 ohm ratings given. I'm dubious about this amps ability to drive other than the easiest of 8 ohm loads.
In that regard? I'd suspect the EMO product, from either line, would outperform and indeed, sound better, than 90% of HT receivers when presented with anything but the 'easiest' load.
What the specs and measurements DON'T say is every bit ass important as what they DO say.
