Putting together a second system, fell into a Carver power amp for a steal of a price. What is this collectives thoughts of a LMC-1 used as a stereo preamp? (only asking because i think i have a line on one)

My personal experience is that HT pre-amp are just not that good at stereo. I don't know the lps-1 specifically, but it would have to be less than $100 for me to even consider it. At least then if you are unhappy, you could move on.
Your better bet is to look for a Usp-1 , or even a new PT-100 or Schiit Saga.
Also my local craigslist turns up some gems from time to time. Look for an older Acurus or B&K as they come up on the cheap sometimes.

In the past, I'd have agreed with brubacca, but since I heard novisnick's XMC-1 as a stereo preamp, I can't use any blanket stink-eye toward HT processors used in stereo. Now other processors may not be as good as the XMC-1 (I haven't heard any to compare), but the XMC-1 is quite good. I would, however, second brubacca's recommendation of the PT-100. Can't be beat for that price!

Look for an inexpensive used pre-amp.

Reason i ask is that one is in the local CL and has been for a bit. If i can get it for a C note, it might be worth my while. I must add that i recently purchased a used USP-1 for my main system. I am also sitting on a Marantz AV7005 pre/pro that could use, but would rather sell. If i could get that sold along with other stuff, i would go for a XSP-1 for the main system....

I had a USP-1, it was very musical and accurate, but IMO very bright and gave me listener fatigue. I upgraded to the XSP-1 and wow what a difference! Fatigue was gone and still very accurate !

First off I'll say this: I don't sit down to a listening session with the idea that I can hear the church mouse farting in the background noise in Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions recordings. It was recorded in a church. I sit down to relax and enjoy the music - not to find fault with something.
I hear more differences with speakers than I do swapping in/out different electronics. I've owned many processors over the years. That includes an LMC-1 (a model t if ever there were one) - one UMC-1 (totally forgettable!) - UMC-200 (good but not great) - Onkyo PR-SC885 (also good but not great) - Integra DHC 40.1 (nice unit - bad HDMI!) - my current processor (CX-A5000) which does every thing I need it to and more - a crap-load of AVRs - 2 channel preamps by Emotiva (USP-1 - XSP-1) - Parasound 2100 - B&K PT-3 stereo preamp. I also have a PT-100 preamp in the back room 2 channel. Some of the electronics colored the sound in slight ways - some were quite transparent - the XSP-1 & the USP-1 were very similar in that regard. I know what I like when it comes to audio and I like what I'm hearing. So I see no reason to change anything.
The same can be said for all of the stereo preamps I've owned. For a variety of reasons I'll probably never have another 2 channel preamp in the living room unless I decide to go all stereo - something not likely to happen. I like the flexibility of a processor or AVR and more than 2 speakers. If I reverted to 2 channel it'll probably be the ST-120 and an XSP-1 with the song towers. The Yamaha delivers excellent audio quality in 2 channel pure direct - and multi-channel sound. It's performance at HDMI switching is quick - maybe 1-2 seconds. The best argument I can make for using a processor over a two channel pre is convenience. Processors have much more versatility than any 2 channel preamp. Plus there is much less cabling - fewer remotes - more space in the audio rack - and the audio quality is great IMO.

I thought I was the only one who heard that damned mouse... about 1:33 into "Misguided Angel", right?!? Mousy little bastard...
